Football Suffers Setback At San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Behind four first half touchdowns from running back Jonah Hodges, the University of San Diego got out to a fast start and dropped Davidson Saturday afternoon at Torero Stadium, 52-3.
Hodges rushed for 176 yards on 11 carries with the four scores including a long rush of 68 yards to put San Diego up big early and cruise into the intermission with a healthy 42-0 advantage.
The Wildcats were unable to keep the Torero offense off the field, losing the time of possession battle by nearly six minutes and did not force a punt until the fourth quarter.
Davidson's lone scoring drive in the fourth was a 10-play, 70-yard drive, setting up a 35-yard Trevor Smith field goal.
The Wildcats tried to get things going in the second behind a few big plays. Junior quarterback Taylor Mitchell found freshman wide receiver William Wicks for a 48-yard reception down the middle of the field. On the ensuing snap, Mitchell went at Wicks again, dropping a ball over his right shoulder in the end zone in double coverage, but it was swatted away.
Later in the stanza, Mitchell went at sophomore receiver Kahleel Shaw, connecting for a 28-yard pass. The drive setup a 46-yard Smith field goal attempt, but Smith's kick sailed just right. Shaw made three catches for 59 yards to lead the offense.
Mitchell completed 8-of-20 passes for 143 yards and threw no interceptions for the second consecutive game. Freshman Keylan Brown carried the ball 14 times for 59 yards.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday, Oct. 15 back at Richardson Stadium when they play host to Butler in PFL play. Kickoff from Stephen B. Smith Field is slated for 12 p.m.
