DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite taking an early 14-0 lead, the Davidson football team could not hang on, falling as time expired to a game-winning field goal from the leg of Butler's Drew Bevelhimer in Pioneer Football League action at Richardson Stadium Saturday afternoon, 20-17.

The Bulldogs picked off freshman quarterback Stockton McGuire at their own goal line on what would be the final drive for the 'Cats, paving the way for an 11-play, 69-yard drive to set up Bevelhimer's 29-yard game-winning kick.

With the loss Davidson falls to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in PFL action, while with the win Butler improves to 3-4 and 1-3 in the league.

The Wildcats got off to a torrid start, scoring on their first offensive play from scrimmage, a 74-yard touchdown grab for junior Cam Cheuvront. Davidson made it a two-possession game early in the second, capping a 12-play, 79-yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown reception for sophomore tight end Nick Nolting.

Following a Butler touchdown in the second, freshman defensive back Rayshawn McCall picked off his second pass of the season, intercepting Bulldog quarterback Will Marty at midfield to halt a potential game tying drive.

Out of the break, Butler turned to quarterback Malcolm Weaver, who made an immediate impact, taking it 90 yards himself to knot it up at 14 apiece on the third play of the half for the Bulldogs.

On the ensuing Butler possession, senior safety Jaylen Mize picked off Weaver deep in Wildcat territory to halt a go-ahead score. The interception set up the 'Cats third and final scoring drive of the day. Junior running back Austin Wells found a hole and took it 56 yards, the longest rush of his career, helping set up a 28-yard field goal for classmate Trevor Smith. With the kick through the uprights, Davidson took a 17-14 edge into the final quarter.

In the fourth, Butler connected on field goals of 18 and 29 yards on both of their drives, eating up 9:08 of possession.

McGuire finished the game 21-of-34 for a career-high 273 yards passing and two touchdowns. Cheuvront caught five passes for 115 yards including a 74-yard TD grab on the 'Cats first offensive play from scrimmage, a new career long.

Senior linebacker Nate Casey and sophomore cornerback Steven Spears each recorded six tackles. Casey made five solo stops and two tackles for loss in his first game back in three weeks from injury. Sophomore Boo Jordan entered the game atop the PFL in sacks and added another to his season total, improving to 6.0 sacks overall.

The Wildcats return to action Saturday, Oct. 22 when they travel to Marist for a PFL tilt in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Kickoff against the Red Foxes is slated for 12 p.m.
