POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist wide receiver Juston Christian caught six passes for 136 yards, but none bigger than the 83-yard scoring reception in the third as Davidson football fell in Pioneer Football road action at Tenney Stadium Saturday, 31-10.
The Red Foxes jumped out to a 21-3 halftime lead and held on for their fourth consecutive win, all in-league, moving to 4-3 overall and 4-0 in the PFL. With the loss, Davidson falls to 2-6 and 0-5 in conference clashes.
Davidson got on the board in the early second, capping an 11-play, 56-yard drive with a 33-yard Trevor Smith field goal. The kick cut into the two-touchdown Marist lead and Davidson headed into the break down, 21-3.
After the half, Davidson crossed into Marist territory, but was promptly stopped. Going for it on fourth-and-one, but the toss to junior wide receiver Jaris Scott was off the mark.
The 'Cats had another great opportunity later in the third as senior Will Barefoot recovered a muffed punt at the Davidson 26-yard line. However, bad luck continued to spoil the Wildcats as Wes Beans made a one-handed interception at the five-yard line to dash the scoring hopes.
Davidson finally found the end zone in the fourth. Freshman wide receiver Stockton McGuire set up the score with a 29-yard scamper to the Red Fox 26-yard line. Junior wide receiver Cam Cheuvront grabbed his first catch of the day, as McGuire found him just shy of the goal line for a 23-yard pickup. Sophomore Kahleel Shaw finished it off, hitting the outside from three yards out for the lone Davidson touchdown of the day.
The defense was led by senior safety Jaylen Mize who made a team-high seven tackles, while freshman Bryce Perry-Martin made six stops, including 1.5 for loss.
McGuire rushed for 76 yards on 14 carries, but completed just 8-of-23 passes with two picks. Scott caught three balls on the day.
The 'Cats return to action next Saturday, Oct. 29 at home against Jacksonville. Kickoff from Richardson Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
