DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson shook off a sluggish first half by scoring seven goals in the second half and held on for an 8-7 comeback victory over Holy Cross Tuesday night under the lights inside Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse.
The Wildcats overcame a 4-1 halftime deficit to improve to 2-2 on the season and 3-0 all-time vs. the Crusaders (0-6).
It was a game that went down to the wire in the final 14 minutes. After Holy Cross took a 6-5 lead, Emma Sissman tied it up with her second goal of the second half on a free-position score with 13:16 remaining.
Davidson concluded its comeback by getting a goal from Christine Molinari with 5:05 left and then an empty net goal by Lucy Sexton four minutes later. It proved to be the game-winner as Holy Cross nearly forced overtime.
The Crusaders scored with 38 ticks left to make it 8-7. Then on the ensuing draw control, They won the ball and quickly called a timeout. Out of the huddle, Holy Cross moved the ball down to Davidson's zone, working it around until with five seconds left, Maddie Ward tried to make a move at the top of the circle, but slipped and fell, turning the ball over and the final horn sounded giving the Wildcats the victory.
Molinari and Sexton tallied two goals and an assist each in the second half to pace the 'Cats' offense. Sissman picked up two goals to give her a team-leading 12 on the season, while pulling in a season-best seven draw controls.
Holy Cross' Keely Connors and Alexis Leighton scored twice each, while Ward, Margie Smith and Stephanie Ford picked up single goals.
Davidson was only able to muster a Morgan Burch goal with 17:22 on the clock in the first half. But, its defense led by goalie Rose Woolson kept it within striking distance by allowing just four goals in half.
Sissman got things rolling in the new half with a goal about four minutes in, and Molinari and Sarah Kopp followed with goals of their own to tie things up at 4-all with 24:49 left in regulation.
Twice Holy Cross would take the lead, but Davidson came right back with a score of its own to tie things up before it went on a 3-0 run to take the two-goal lead at 8-6.
Woolson matched her personal best with 10 saves between the pipes and picked up a career-best six groundballs.
The game was as even as the score. Davidson had a 24-21 edge on shots, while Holy Cross picked up six more groundballs (20-14). Both teams scored one goal each on a free-position shot and Davidson won the draw control battle, 12-5. Fouls were 24-22 and turnovers were 13-12, with the Crusaders leading both categories.
Davidson will host Big South-foe High Point in three days at home, March 11.
