DAVIDSON, N.C. – Jake Sidwell went 2-for-3 and drove home a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to lead Davidson to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Marist in both team's season opener Friday evening at Wilson Field.
In addition to his game-winning two-out single that plated Adrian Mayans and Will Robertson, Sidwell doubled in the seventh and later scored on an Andrew Pope single to tie the score, 2-2.
With the game tied 2-2, Marist went back in front in the top of the eighth on a Wildcat error that scored Tyler Kapuscinski.
Freshman Austin Leonard pitched 0.2 innings in relief to pick up his first career win for Davidson (1-0), while Ryan Thomas suffered the loss. Peyton Hopkins tossed a scoreless ninth to record his first-career save in a Wildcat uniform.
Joey Aiola put Marist (0-1) up 1-0 in the top of the first with a solo home run.
After Sam Foy tied the game in third with a sac fly, the Red Foxes went back in front on Jack Shirk's homer in the top of the fourth.
Both team's finished with five hits.
Senior Clark Beeker started on the hill for the Wildcats, working 6.0 innings, allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out four.
Davidson will continue its season-opening weekend with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch against Buffalo Saturday afternoon.
