PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Duquesne's Jill Vacanti and Clare Hurley combined for eight goals, including two in the opening four minutes by Vacanti, and Davidson was unable to recover after the Dukes' fast start, dropped a 12-7 road decision Friday afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse at Rooney Field.
Duquesne (8-8, 4-3 A-10) scored three of its five first-half goals in the first five minutes and led by as many as four in the second half before pulling away in the final minutes for the win.
Davidson fell to 5-10 on the year and 2-5 in league play as it played its final road game of the season.
Paige Farrar and Annie Brockett paced the 'Cats' offense with two goals each. Picking up single goals on the day was Nicole Pettiglio, Emily Rademacher and Christine Molinari.
Goalie Katy Boyle matched her career-high with 12 saves to push her season total to 126. It was her fourth double-digit save game of the year.
Vacanti added an assist with her four goals, while the Dukes' Clare Hurley had six points on four goals and two assists. Kaitlyn DeHaven and Kaelin Shaw added a goal and assist each.
Down 9-5 late in the second half, the Wildcats struck quickly to get within two at 9-7 and 4:54 left. They picked back-to-back goals from the freshman duo Farrar and Molinari that came just 10 second apart from each other. Emma Sissman picked up an assist on Molinari's sixth score of the season.
It would be as close as the 'Cats would get the rest of the way though. Duquesne tacked on three more goals in the final two minutes of the game for the final score of 12-7.
Davidson found itself down 3-0 to start the game after the Dukes' Vacanti scored twice in the first five minutes. Brockett got the 'Cats on the board 10 minutes later with her 20th goal of the season and 15:54 on the clock.
Brockett answered another Duquesne goal later at 11:09 off Emily Cooke's 17th assist of the year and Davidson trailed 4-2. Each team scored one more goal before the half, with Pettiglio finding the back of the net for the 20th time this year to make it 5-3.
The Dukes' lead grew to four at 8-4 through the first 11 minutes of the second half. Farrar scored the Wildcats' lone goal in that span.
Rademacher made it 8-5 with her team-leading 24th goal and 15:32 left in the half, but again Duquesne answered back with a goal two minutes later to push its lead back to four at 9-5.
Davidson had advantages in draw controls (11-10) and groundballs (14-12), while Duquesne outshot the 'Cats 30-17.
Davidson wraps up its season Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest against St. Bonaventure for Senior Day.
