DAVIDSON, N.C. — In a battle down to the final horn, Davidson came up just short in falling in its first-ever Atlantic 10 game Friday to George Washington, 11-10, under the lights in Richardson Stadium in women's Lacrosse.

The 'Cats' last-second effort to tie the game and force overtime went wide off the stick of Emma Sissman, who fired off an off-balance shot attempt while fading away before the final horn sounded.

It was both team's league opener as Davidson dropped to 3-5 overall, while GW moved to 3-6.

Sissman paced the Wildcat attack with three goals, all coming in the first half, while Emily Cooke assisted on all three of the goals. Emily Rademacher added two scores, and Catherine Schmidt scored a goal and dished out an assist. Four other 'Cats scored a single goal each.

George Washington had four players with multiple goals, led by Michaela Lynch's three. Jamie Bumgardner had three points on two goals and an assist, while Julia Lawson and Bailey Forcier scored twice.

Much like last year's 8-7 meeting won by the Colonials, the game went down to the wire. Tonight's contest featured five ties and six lead changes.

Davidson had a 9-7 lead after Schmidt hooked up with Arden Simone, who tallied her fourth goal of the year, with 18:43 left in the game. But, GW came back with a 4-0 run over the next 13 minutes to grab an 11-9 lead. Forcier scored two of the four Colonial goals, including the game-winner with 5:29 left in the second half.

Annie Brockett brought the score to 11-10 with her 16th goal of the season and just 44 ticks remaining to set up a last-second effort by the 'Cats to try and tie the game.

After GW grabbed the draw control, Rachel Hianik forced a turnover in the 'Cats' defensive zone with 25 seconds left and picked up the groundball. Davidson quickly got the ball across midfield where Sissman gathered in a pass and fired off a shot while fading away from the goal just outside the eight-meter arc, but it fell short and was scooped up by the Colonials' goalie Mackenzie Jones to finish the game.

Jones matched Davidson's Katy Boyle with nine saves each between the pipes.

The first half saw Davidson erase a 5-3 deficit by using its own 4-0 run to take a 7-5 advantage with 2:40 left in the half. Sissman scored twice during the run, while Cooke assisted on both scores.

The Wildcats would go into the halftime up 7-6 after GW scored a goal with 28 seconds left.

The Colonials held slight advantages for the game in shots (24-21), groundballs (14-11) and draw controls (13-10). Davidson was 11-for-12 in clear attempts and converted on the game's lone free-position goal. Both teams kept the turnovers to a minimum, combining for just 14.

Davidson remains at home and will host No. Duke next Tuesday, March 31, at 6 p.m.
