Davidson Falls to SIUE and VMI in Tri-Meet

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson wrestling team (4-9, 0-2 SoCon) opened its home schedule Friday against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (4-14, 1-2 SoCon) and Virginia Military Institute (6-5, 3-1 SoCon) at John M. Belk Arena.
Scott Patrick and Alex Palinksi earn victories in both duals, while Anthony Elias, James McCord and Ian Solcz all posted a win, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats fell to SIUE, 24-13 and VMI, 21-16.
The match began at 141 lbs., as neither team dressed at 125 lbs., or 133 lbs. In the first bout, SIUE's Angelo Silvestro earned a 6-4 decision over Kevin Birmingham, giving the Cougars the early advantage.
SIUE padded its lead with a 9-4 decision at 149 lbs., as Karsten Van Velsor defeated James McCord.
Davidson bounced back as Palinski earned a decision over Sam Zimmerman at 157 lbs. The sophomore scored a takedown in the first period and another in the third period to solidify the victory. The Cougars went on to win four of the next five weight classes, to take control of the match.
Scott Patrick finished the day off with a solid 10-2 major decision over Derek Nagel at 184 lbs., bringing the final score to 24-13.
Against VMI, Anthony Elias got things rolling early with an 8-5 decision over Hunter Starner at 133 lbs. Elias scored two takedowns and earned the riding point to put the Wildcats on the board.
After dropping the match at 141 lbs., McCord cut the deficit to 9-6 with an 11-6 victory vs. Jack Krall. Alex Palinski evened the score with a win at 157 lbs. Palinski posted a 9-6 decision over Samuel Paulay.
Davidson dropped the next two matches to fall behind, 16-9, but Patrick scored a major decision, 8-0, against Derek Thurman to make it 16-13.
The Wildcats had the chance to pull ahead after Solcz posted a sudden-victory win over Urayoan Garcia at 197 lbs. Tied at 1 heading into overtime, Solcz scored one final takedown to secure the win and even the score at 16.
In the final match, freshman Will Cooley fell to Juan Adams as Davidson came up short, 21-16.
Davidson will return to action next Friday, Jan. 30 as it travels to Chattanooga for a noon dual.
