PRINCETON, N.J. – Princeton quarterback Quinn Epperly rushed for four touchdowns to lead the Tigers to a 56-17 victory over Davidson in non-conference football action Saturday night on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
Tight end Trey Huelskamp led Davidson (1-4) with nine catches for 82 yards – both career highs - but Princeton (1-1) used a fast-paced offense that racked up 478 total yards, including a ground game that produced 233 yards and all six offensive touchdowns. The Tigers possessed the ball on offense for just 20 minutes, 22 seconds.
In addition to the four scores, Epperly led the running game with 16 rushes for 118 yards, while completing 15 of 18 pass attempts for 176 yards.
For Davidson, J.P. Douglas completed 29 of 44 passes for 260 yards, with one touchdown to William Morris. Morris followed Huelskamp with six catches for 60 yards. Princeton held the Wildcats' running game to 67 yards, led by David Rogers with 39 and a touchdown.
Princeton took command of the game on the opening kickoff, as Dre Nelson returned it 89 yards for a touchdown. Nelson also had a rushing touchdown later in the game.
Davidson immediately answered with a field goal, but Epperly rushed for three touchdowns to give Princeton a 29-3 lead at the start of the second quarter.
The Wildcats' offense was able to find a rhythm on its next possession, as Douglas was 5-for-5 passing, and Rogers capped the drive with a 4-yard rush into the end zone to bring Davidson within 19 points. However, Princeton was able to add a touchdown and field goal before the end of the half for a 39-10 lead at the break.
Davidson came out strong in the second half, assembling a 23-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that took 10 minutes, 59 seconds. The 'Cats converted two fourth downs before Morris hauled in a 12-yard pass reception after the ball first deflected off of him and popped straight up into the air.
It was the last time Davidson would score though, as Princeton added a field goal and two more touchdowns, including one more from Epperly, for the final margin.
Davidson will return to action next Saturday at home in Richardson Stadium, hosting Pioneer Football League foe Dayton at 1 p.m.
