Brooks Player of the Year; Three Others All-League

3/4/2014 1:43:00 PM | Men's Basketball

DAVIDSON, N.C. – In addition to De'Mon Brooks earning his second Southern Conference Player of the Year honor, Davidson teammates Brian Sullivan (2nd Team) and Tyler Kalinoski (3rd Team) were named all-conference by the media, while Jack Gibbs was voted to the coaches' all-freshman team, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

A native of Charlotte, Brooks finished the regular season averaging 18.4 points and 7.0 rebounds, which ranked third and sixth among league leaders, respectively. In SoCon play, the three-time first-team selection led the conference in scoring (20.5) and field-goal percentage (65.7), while averaging 7.6 rebounds, good for seventh best.

Brooks, who hit double figures in 22 of 24 contests, including the 20-point plateau 11 times, joins Fred Hetzel (1963-65), Mike Maloy (1969, 1970), Stephen Curry (2008, 2009) and Jake Cohen (2012, 2013) as the only Wildcats to earn multiple player-of-the-year honors.

After sitting out last season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules, Sullivan averaged 13.5 points during the regular season, while shooting just under 40 percent from behind the 3-point arc. In addition, Sullivan made a league-best 3.0 3-pointers per game and shot 46.2 percent from downtown against SoCon competition.

For the season, the native of Upper Arlington, Ohio, hit double digits 18 times, including the 20-point mark on seven occasions and a 33-point game at North Carolina. Sullivan has made four or more 3-pointers in a game nine times and leads the team with 84 triples.

Ranked among the nation's top 3-point shooters, Kalinoski leads the Wildcats in minutes played (33.3 mpg), assists (100/3.3 apg), 3-point field-goal percentage (.482) and steals (37), while averaging 10.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

A junior from Overland Park, Kan., Kalinoski scored in double figures 17 times and posted a pair of double-doubles from his shooting guard position. His first career 10-point, 10-rebound performance came against nationally-ranked Virginia (11/16) when he scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Four games later, he flirted with a triple-double, recording 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in Davidson's win at Stetson.

Just the sixth Wildcat to earn all-freshman honors, Gibbs appeared in all 30 regular season contests off the bench averaging 6.5 points, 2.1 assists and 20.1 minutes per game, while shooting just under 80 percent at the charity stripe.

A 5-11 point guard from Westerville, Ohio, Gibbs led Davidson in assists seven times and scored in double figures eight more, which included a 20-point effort at Stetson.

Top-seeded Davidson will take on the winner of #8 Samford / #9 Appalachian State in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Southern Conference Tournament Saturday at 12 p.m. in Asheville.
