Wildcats Welcome Belmont Abbey for Home Opener

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson wrestling team will open its 2014-15 home slate Friday night at 7 p.m., as the Wildcats welcome cross-town rival Belmont Abbey to Belk Arena.
Headlock On Hunger
The Davidson wrestling team will be supporting Headlock on Hunger, an initiative that aims to help provide food for children who are dealing with hunger at home. The team will be collected canned food throughout the season at all home matches. At the end of the season, the food collected will be brought to the Southern Conference Championship. Fans that donate canned food will have the opportunity to win a variety of prizes at each home match.
About Davidson
The Davidson wrestling squad returns 14 grapplers, while welcoming eight newcomers. The Wildcats will be led by a core group of veteran wrestlers, including seniors Scott Patrick, Kevin Birmingham, Anthony Elias, Philip Elias, Ed Isola and Ian Solcz. Davidson, which posted a 5-14 record a season ago, was picked sixth out of eight teams in the Southern Conference Preseason Poll.

The Wildcats went 2-1, sandwiching a loss to Maryland, 36-9, around wins over Alderson-Broaddus, 31-9, and Johns Hopkins, 47-6. Senior Kevin Birmingham was undefeated on the day as the Davidson wrestling team took to the mat three times Sunday at the Maryland Duals.
125 lbs.
After missing part of his junior campaign, senior Philip Elias returns to the lineup at 125 lbs. Elias started the season off with a 2-1 record at the Maryland Duals. As a junior, Elias finished with a 7-9 record to go along with one pin and one major decision.
133 lbs.
Senior Anthony Elias and freshman Dustin Runzo will duke it out for the starting position at 133. Elias finished his junior campaign with a 14-10 mark and four pins. After winning the SoCon Championship in 2012, Elias finished his junior season with a 14-10 mark and four pins. Runzo made his collegiate debut at the Maryland Duals. Runzo posted a decision over Alderson-Broaddus's Micah Powell and Johns Hopkins' Christian Vallis.
141 lbs.
Sophomores James McCord and Alex Palinski will battle it out for a spot in the lineup. Last season, McCord went 2-14, while Palinksi owned a 1-6 mark before an injury forced him to miss the remainder of the season. McCord got the nod at the Maryland Duals and went 2-1, with a major decision over Alderson-Broaddus's Chris Brent.
149 lbs.
Senior Kevin Birmingham will look to build off his successful junior season, which saw the 149-pounder qualify for the NCAA tournament after falling to Appalachian State's Dylan Cottrell in the SoCon finals. The Sicklerville, N.J., native tied the Davidson program record with 14 pins to finish the season ranked seventh in the nation in wins by fall. In the season opener, Birmingham posted three pins to go undefeated at the Maryland Duals. Joining Birmingham is freshman Danny Jones. The Garden City, N.Y., native was a three-time Catholic State finalist with a career record of 166-41.
157 lbs.
At the Maryland Duals, Alex Palinski took to the mat three times to own a 1-2 record. Zach Colangelo, Dan Hagemann, Nick Pappayliou and Michael Shanahan will also look to get some experience in this weight class.
165 lbs.
Patrick Devlin returns for his junior season at 165 pounds. As a sophomore, Devlin turned in a 2-8 overall record with one pin at the Wolfpack Open.
174 lbs.
Upperclassmen Nathaniel Powers and Ian Solcz will battle it out for the starting role at 174. A season ago, Powers finished 9-15, pinning four opponents and claiming one major decision, while Solcz moving from 174 to 184 and eventually earning the starting spot at 197 to finish with a 3-3 record.
184 lbs.
Defending SoCon Champion Scott Patrick will led the way at 184 lbs., looking to make his way back to the NCAA tournament in 2015. Patrick, who was named to the earned SoCon Preseason all-conference team, went 22-5 a season ago. Patrick will be joined by freshman Ryan Devlin, who made his collegiate debut at the Maryland Duals. Sophomore Josh Sawyer and freshman Konner Pritchard will also look to get into the rotation in this weight class.
197 lbs.
Ian Solcz returns to the mat for his senior season at 197 lbs. At the Maryland Duals, Solcz went 2-1, earning two pins over Alderson-Broaddus's Nick Nester and John Hopkins' Joey Tilson. Along with Solcz, Brian Capps and Michael Moore will also look to gain experience.

Ed Isola returns to the lineup in the heavyweight class for the 2014-15 season. Isola went 5-20 with a pin as a junior. At Maryland, Isola turned in a 1-1 record tallying a decision over Alderson-Broaddus's Aerison Parrish before falling to Maryland's Sean Twigg. Isola is joined by newcomer Will Cooley. Cooley posted a pin over Johns Hopkins' Ellis Flannery at the 4:02 mark in his collegiate debut at the Maryland Duals.
