Gibbs Leads Davidson to Exhibition Win

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Led by 27 points from Jack Gibbs and a strong second half, Davidson defeated Lenoir-Rhyne, 83-56, in an exhibition men's basketball contest Tuesday night in Belk Arena.
Gibbs, a sophomore team captain, went 8-for-10 from the field, hitting 5-of-6 attempts from beyond the arc, and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe to pace the Wildcats' offense. He was joined in double figures by Peyton Aldridge (11), Jordan Barham (11) and Tyler Kalinoski (10).
As a team, the 'Cats converted 65.2 percent of their attempts from the field in the second half (49.0 percent for the game) and drained 12-of-24 three-ball attempts overall. Davidson also generated 29 points off of 17 L-R turnovers, as Gibbs and Kalinoski combined for half of the 'Cats' 12 steals with three each.
Nathan Ekwu led the way on the glass, pulling in eight rebounds in 18 minutes of action.
After trailing by three early in the second half, Davidson scored 24 consecutive points over a 6-minute, 45-second stretch to take command of the game. During the run, the Wildcats went 7-for-8 from the field, also hitting 4-of-5 treys, and forced five of the Bears' seven turnovers.
Davidson's lead grew as large as 30 points late in the game.
For Lenoir-Rhyne, Will Perry led with 16 points, Mike Wagner had 11 and Rob Noyes added nine to go along with seven boards. L-R shot 39.4 percent from the field on the night after getting held to a 29.2 percent clip in the final half.
Despite 15 first-half points from Gibbs, Davidson trailed 33-30 at the break. In addition to holding the Wildcats to just 34.6 percent in the period, Lenoir-Rhyne scored 20 points in the paint and 10 second-chance points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Wildcats will tip-off the 2014-15 season with a 2 p.m. home contest against Catholic Saturday afternoon.
