Wildcats Suffer 3-1 Setback at Longwood

LONGWOOD, Va. – Despite outshooting and out-cornering Longwood, Davidson couldn't overcome a pair of early scores and fell to the Lancers 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Field. The loss drops the 'Cats to 4-8 on the season and 0-4 in NorPac play while the Lancers improve to 6-7 and 4-0.

Davidson attempted 16 shots to Longwood's 10, with 13 of the 'Cats' shots coming on goal. Melissa Funsten was the team leader with five shots, while Katherine English had four. Anna Davis, who scored Davidson's lone goal of the game, and Brooke Osborne each finished with three attempts. The 'Cats also had a large advantage on penalty corners 10-2.

Stacey de Grandhomme notched a pair of goals for the Lancers off three shots, while goalkeeper Kaye Goulding came up with 10 stops in earning the win. Her Davidson counterpart Carolyn Macek made six stops.

After 18 minutes of scoreless action, the Lancers struck first on a goal Nicole Deckard. Deckard traded passes with Kim Ruiter before sending it in to give Longwood the 1-0 lead. De Grandhomme added another score, sending the ball just under the crossbar to make it 2-0 in favor of the Lancers with five minutes to play in the first half.

De Grandhomme added her second of the game five minutes into the second half, taking a pass from Deckard and sending it past Macek, who had come out to play it, as the Wildcats found themselves down 3-0.

However with just under 10 minutes to play, Davidson was able to cut the deficit to two. Funsten attempted a shot off a Tyler McFayden penalty corner, with the Longwood keeper coming up with the stop. Davis grabbed the rebound and sent it in to put the score at 3-1 in favor of the Lancers.

The Wildcats return home for the first time in over a month when they host Appalachian State in a conference match Friday evening. The tilt is set for 6:30 p.m. at Belk Turf Field.
