DAVIDSON, N.C. – Anna Davis struck with 3:51 remaining to end the sudden victory overtime period and hand the Davidson field hockey team a 4-3 win over in-state rival Appalachian State in a NorPac contest Friday evening at Belk Turf Field. The win is the Cats' first league win of the season, putting them at 5-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
Melissa Funsten led the squad with eight shots, finishing with a goal and an assist, while Davis posted five shots. Freshmen Anne Federico and Katherine English each added a goal, while Brooke Osborne came up with a pair of assists. The Wildcats outshot the Mountaineers 25-7 and held a 9-5 advantage on penalty corners.
Goalkeeper Carolyn Macek made three stops in the win to move to 4-5 on the season.
Lynnae Luettich and Jessi Stuart each had a pair of shots and a goal, with Lindsay Amador adding a pair of assists. Casten Farr also scored for the Mountaineers, who fall to 2-10 on the season and 1-3 in NorPac play. Sarah Anderson made 14 saves in the loss, with Anna Copsey and Laura Malinoski each coming up with a defensive save.
The Mountaineers got on the board first, as Luettich deflected a shot by Malinoski into the goal for the 1-0 lead. ASU added another when Amador sent a pass over to Farr, who knocked it in to give App. State the 2-0 lead. The Wildcats countered soon after, when Anderson came out to play a loose ball that was picked up and sent in by Federico to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Stuart made it a two-goal cushion for App. State, once again off a feed from Amador, midway through the first half. Just when it looked like the Wildcats would head into halftime down by a pair of scores, Funsten came through. Osborne sent a pass over to Funsten, who bee Anderson in front of the net with less than 30 seconds to play in the half as Appalachian State took a 3-2 lead into the break.
The Wildcats stood their ground in their own end, breaking up numerous passes to keep the Mountaineers' advantage at just one goal in the second half. English then tied the game with 13 minutes remaining, netting her fifth of the season off a corner. Tyler McFayden inserted a penalty corner to Danielle King, with Funsten faking the shot but sending it to her left. English took the pass and banged it home from the top of the circle. Neither team found the back of the net for the rest of regulation, forcing an overtime period.
Funsten had a pair of early attempts in the overtime period, but Anderson came up with the save both times. Anderson also made the stop on Becca Jones, who was later awarded a penalty stroke but couldn't convert. Davis had a strong shot that Malinoski kept from going into the goal. However, Osborne corralled a loose ball and sent it to Davis, who found the back of the net to give the Wildcats the 4-3 overtime triumph.
Davidson will remain at Belk Turf Field for four of its next fives games. Next up for the Cats is a tilt with James Madison on Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m.
