DAVIDSON, N.C. – A pair of second-half rushing touchdowns by Gary Scott and a strong defensive effort secured a 27-6 victory for Drake over Davidson in Pioneer Football League action Saturday afternoon on Smith Field in Richardson Stadium.

Davidson (0-6, 0-3 PFL) had a chance early in the second half to take the lead, receiving the kickoff and driving 68 yards to the Drake (3-3, 2-1 PFL) 2-yardline, but John Bloss broke up Jonathan Carkhuff's 4th-and-goal pass in the end zone. The Bulldogs then took over on downs and drove 98 yards on 20 plays, eating up the remainder of the third quarter, before Scott rushed into the end zone from 5 yards out. The extra point attempt went off the right upright though, resulting in a 19-6 advantage for Drake. Scott added a 6-yard touchdown run with 7:58 remaining in the game, and a successful two-point conversion ended up being the game's final score.

Carkhuff became the first Davidson quarterback to throw for over 10,000 yards, completing 20 of 35 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown. Will Morris caught six passes for 84 yards and a touchdown, while senior Jeff McDaniels caught a career-high seven passes for 85 yards.

Andy Rice completed 26 of 34 passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns with one interception for Drake. Nick Rosa had nine catches for 108 yards and a touchdown, while tight end Kevin Marshall added seven for 43 yards and a score. In addition to his two touchdowns, Scott led a strong rushing attack, carrying the ball 26 times for 110 yards.

The Wildcats had one opportunity to get back in the game in the fourth quarter, but an 11-play, 65-yard drive stalled out at the Drake 10 on 4th-and-3. Drake was then able to run out the clock.

Davidson went to the locker room at halftime trailing by a touchdown after Myles Atkins' second interception of the season setup a late scoring drive. Down 13-0, Atkins picked off Rice near midfield and returned it 33 yards to the Drake 18, but was too exuberant celebrating, resulting in a 15-yard penalty after the play. The extra distance did not phase Carkhuff though, who went over 10,000 career passing yards with a 6-yard pass to AJ Pignone, and following an 8-yard pass to Garrett Diehl, connected with Morris on a 19-yard touchdown pass. The extra point attempt was blocked though, and Drake took a 13-6 lead into the locker room.

The Bulldogs struck first with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Marshall, capping a 10-play, 58-yard drive with 50 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The extra point was no good, but Drake took a 13-0 lead with 10:57 remaining in the half on a 35-yard touchdown pass to Rosa.

Back-to-back completions to McDaniels of 22 and 23 yards, respectively moved the Wildcats into Drake territory on the ensuing possession, but the 'Cats were unable to convert on 4th-and-5 from the 26.

Davidson will next host Marist for homecoming Saturday at 1 p.m. in Richardson Stadium.

NOTES: Game captains for Davidson were Jeff McDaniels, Robert Klein, Bates Taylor and Ryan LeakJonathan Carkhuff was presented with footballs commemorating his Davidson career passing record and Davidson single-game passing record.
