DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson pulled back within two touchdowns early in the fourth quarter, but Marist scored twice more to take a 42-14 victory over the Wildcats in Pioneer Football League action Saturday afternoon on Smith Field at Richardson Stadium.
Davidson (0-7, 0-4 PFL) led 8-3 late in the first quarter, but Marist (4-3, 3-1 PFL) scored the next four touchdowns to build a 28-8 lead by the start of the fourth quarter. J.P. Douglas then entered the game at quarterback for the Wildcats and engineered a four-play, 72-yard touchdown drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jeff McDaniels, but a 44-yard touchdown pass from Chuckie Looney to Bartley Leneghan with 4:40 remaining and a 78-yard interception return for a touchdown in the final minute by Cameron Gibson secured the 42-14 victory for the Red Foxes.
Looney completed just 11 of 22 passing attempts for Marist, but totaled 283 passing yards by completing four passes for more than 44 yards with a long of 65. Leneghan's 44-yard touchdown reception and the 65-yarder were part of a four-catch, 163-yard performance, while Matt Trailli also caught four passes, totaling 44 yards with one touchdown. The Red Foxes also made big plays on the ground as they totaled 207 yards. Atiq Lucas gained 131 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown and a long rush of 34 yards, and Wale Onakoya scored a pair of touchdowns, including 41-yarder, in totaling 78 yards on just six carries.
McDaniels enjoyed another career day in leading Davidson offensively, setting career highs with eight catches for 87 yards and also scoring the first two touchdowns of his career. Sophomore William Morris also set a career high with 11 receptions and totaled 87 yards. A trio of quarterbacks were utilized as Jonathan Carkhuff completed 14 of 23 passing attempts for 130 yards and a touchdown with one interception, Douglas went 8-for-13 with his first Davidson passing touchdown and two interceptions, while John Cook went 3-for-5 for 19 yards in an option package.
On the ground for Davidson, David Rogers played in his first game of the season after missing the first six due to injury and totaled 60 yards on 10 carries. Defensively, linebackers Dan Casey and Matt Casey and defensive back Colin Merrill had eight tackles each and all came up with big plays. Dan Casey made back-to-back sacks in the first half, Matt Casey made his first career interception and Colin Merrill did the same and also blocked an extra point.
Marist combined for 10 tackles for loss on defense, led by Hugh Kirwan and Nicholas Foster with 2.0 each. Zach Adler, Gibson and Michael Paen each had interceptions.
The Davidson defense was strong early despite favorable field position for Marist. A short kickoff and penalty gave the Red Foxes the ball on the Davidson 47 to start the game, and they drove to the 5-yard line, but Merrill intercepted a pass in the end zone and was tackled at the two. The 'Cats were unable to advance and punted, giving Marist the ball at the Davidson 41. The Red Foxes reached 3rd-and-1 at the eight, but Merrill broke up Looney's pass attempt, which forced a field goal.
Davidson took the lead on its next possession. An 18-yard completion to McDaniels and a 13-yard run by Robert Klein moved Davidson to the 13-yard line, and then Carkhuff found McDaniels for his first career touchdown. Douglas completed a pass to Tyler Hickey for the two-point conversion and an 8-3 Davidson lead.
The advantage was short lived though as Marist escaped a 3rd-and-15 situation with a 65-yard pass to Lenghan to the Davidson 14. Onakoya rushed it into the end zone on the very next play for a 9-8 lead, and the extra point attempt was no good after a botched hold.
Marist missed a 25-yard field goal attempt early in the second quarter, but scored a touchdown on its next drive as Looney completed a 45-yard pass to Tim Wine to move from Marist territory down to the Davidson 14. Lucas later punched it into the end zone with 5:22 remaining in the half from a yard out for a 15-8 Marist lead, although the extra point kick was wide of the uprights. Davidson drove 67 yards on 15 plays at the end of the half, but Carkhuff's pass from the Marist 8-yard line was intercepted by Adler in the back of the end zone..
Onakoya broke off a 41-yard touchdown run on Marist's first possession of the second half for a 21-8 advantage, but once again the extra point was no good as Merrill came around the edge and blocked it. Marist missed on another field goal attempt late in the third quarter, but Looney completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Trialli on the Red Foxes' next possession for a 28-8 advantage early in the fourth.
Davidson will next travel to Jacksonville for a game set to kick-off at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Wildcats will return home the following week hosting Mercer on Saturday, Nov. 2.
