DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team seeks their first win of the 2012 campaign when it hosts UC Davis tonight and then plays Vermont to finish out the week on Sunday in Richardson Stadium.
The Opening Draw Control
Davidson (0-2) continues its six-game homestand with contests against UC Davis and Vermont this week. The Wildcats play UC Davis on Thursday night at 6 p.m., while finishing out the week with a 1 p.m. contest against Vermont on Sunday, March 4.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
This will be the first time Davidson has faced UC Davis in program history.
The 'Cats and Catamounts of Vermont have seen each other once, back during the 2008 season. The Wildcats hosted Vermont, but fell 15-10 in a back-and-forth affair. Davidson trailed just 7-5 at the half, before Vermont's Tori Wasson scored four second-half goals and the Catamounts opened up 13-6 lead in the half on their way to the five-goal win.
Last Time Out...
... Davidson — Davidson saw the Navy Mids score the first nine goals of the game and the Wildcats were never able to recover in falling 16-5 in their home opener last Saturday.
Ann Fucigna again led the Wildcat scoring attack with her 12th straight multi-goal game, getting a pair of goals to go with an assist for three points. Emily Rademacher, Emily Cooke and Lindsay Cooper each had one goal apiece.
Defensively, Abigail Doelger picked up three groundballs and caused three turnovers to go with a draw control. Goalie Jessica Melby finished with five saves for the game, while freshman goalie Katy Boyle saw her first collegiate action and picked up a couple of saves.
Cooke and Rademacher scored back-to-back goals before the first half concluded, but the 'Cats were down 9-2 at the half. Davidson kept Navy at bay in the second stanza, allowing just five goals while scoring three of its own.
Doelger and Rademacher were named National Lacrosse Conference Players of the Week on Wednesday.
... UC Davis — UC Davis junior attacker Elizabeth Datino tallied five goals while freshman Charlotte Morris provided four assists, but a second-half offensive burst and 17 total steals boosted High Point to a 22-14 win in non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse action at Vert Stadium.
Datino's five-goal output represents the third straight game she has led the Aggies in scoring. Juniors Stephanie Guercio and Hannah Mirza each chipped in two goals, while Anna Geissbuhler posted a goal and two assists.
Geissbuhler scooped up a loose ball off a save, then sent it to sophomore Lauren Nardi to reduce the Panther lead to 9-6 and UC Davis would trail 10-7 at the break.
Four Aggies - Geissbuhler, Morris, Datino and Mirza - netted goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half to pull UC Davis within a one-goal deficit. However, HPU responded with five straight through the 37th minute to claim a 17-11 lead.
... Vermont — For the second straight game senior Samantha Stern led the Vermont Catamounts in scoring, recording six points in a 16-8 victory over Siena in women's lacrosse action at Virtue Field.
Stern was one of three Catamounts to record a hat trick and also added three assists. Teammates Emma Kelly and Marcie Marino also scored three times and sophomore Sydney Mas contributed four points on a pair of goals and assists.
The Catamounts blew the game open, rolling off eight consecutive goals to take a commanding 11-3 advantage into halftime.
Siena fought back in the second stanza, playing to a 5-5 tie over the final 30 minutes. However, the Saints could only get as close as seven after the opening goal of the half by Kristin McMillan.
