DAVIDSON, N.C. – Erin Doherty, Alanna Parker and Emily Cooke each registered a hat trick, and Davidson prevailed at home vs. UC Davis, 15-10, on Thursday night in women's lacrosse at Richardson Stadium.
Davidson (1-2) netted its first win of the season and its first win in the series as both the 'Cats and Aggies (2-2) were facing each other for the first time.
Doherty (1 assist) and Erin Keitel paced the offense overall with four points each. Keitel tallied a pair of goals and two assists. The senior captain helped the Wildcats open a 4-0 lead with an assist and goal in the first eight minutes of play.
Ann Fucigna pushed her consecutive multi-goal streak to 13 straight, getting two goals and an assist. Catherine Schmidt had the first two assists of her collegiate career, while Mary Leonard netted her first career goal.
Allie Lehner paced six Aggie scorers with three goals, while Elizabeth Datino and Elizabeth Landry each put two goals in the net.
The first part of the first half was a game of runs. After Davidson jumped out to the 4-0 lead, Datino registered both her goals during UC Davis' 4-0 run and things were tied up at the 11:45 mark. The Wildcats took a timeout to regroup.
The message was heard as out of the timeout, Doherty sparked a 5-0 run to close out the half with all three of her goals, while assisting on another. Schmidt picked up both of her assists in the last 5:20 of the half and Davidson led 9-4 going into the break.
UC Davis tried to mount a comeback to the start the second period, scoring three of the half's first five goals to get within 11-7 at the 18:46 mark after a Landry goal.
Leonard started a new rally for the 'Cats with a score at the 17:00 minute mark, and Fucigna, Keitel and Parker followed with goals of their own to push the lead out to 15-7. The Aggies tacked on three more for the final score of 15-10.
Goalie Jessica Melby stopped a career-high 17 shots, topping her previous best by one. UC Davis' Jordan Majka had nine saves.
Davidson finished with 18 groundballs, led by Schmidt's season-best four. Abigail Doelger added three groundballs, two caused turnovers and a draw control. Doherty had a team-best five draw controls and hit one of Davidson's three free-position goals.
Davidson remains at home and finishes out the week with a 1 p.m. contest vs. Vermont on Sunday, March 4.
