Cohen named all-conference and McKillop named Coach of the Year.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Conference announced today that Davidson sophomore forward De'Mon Brooks has been named the men's basketball Player of the Year, and head coach Bob McKillop has been named the Coach of the Year in a ballot conducted by the league's head coaches.
Wildcat junior forward Jake Cohen joins Brooks on the all-conference squad.
Brooks becomes the third Wildcat to be named the Player of the Year by the league's coaches, joining Brendan Winters (2005) and Stephen Curry (2008-09). He is the sixth Davidson player to be named SoCon Player of the Year, along with Curry, Winters, Mike Maloy (1969-70), Dick Snyder (1966) and Fred Hetzel (1963-65).
Brooks ranks fourth in the league in scoring with 15.8 points per game and ninth in rebounding with 6.3 rebounds per contest. He also ranks sixth in the league in field goal percentage (.533), and he is one of just three players to rank in the top-10 of all three categories. Davidson's leading scorer and rebounder this season, he has scored at least 20 points in nine games this year, including a season high of 26 at The Citadel Feb. 9.
Cohen ranks 10th in the league in scoring (13.9 ppg), 11th in rebounding (6.0 rpg) and first in blocked shots (1.5 bpg). He was a three-time SoCon Player of the Week selection and was named SoCon Player of the Month in January after recording five consecutive games with 20-plus points. He scored a career-high 29 points against both Georgia Southern and College of Charleston.
McKillop earns Coach of the Year honors from his colleagues for the seventh time as the Wildcats won 20-plus games for the 10th time during his tenure. Davidson finished first in a SoCon Division for the eighth time in the last 11 seasons and the 11th time overall under McKillop.
The 22-7 Wildcats will meet the winner of Samford and Furman in the quarterfinal round of the SoCon Tournament Saturday at 6 p.m. in the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C. The game will be televised live on ESPN3.
