Field Hockey Concludes Season with 6-1 Loss to Cal

FARMVILLE, Va. – Annie Evans converted on a penalty stroke to score the Wildcats' lone goal of the game as the Davidson field hockey team took a 6-1 loss to California in the third-place game of the 2012 NorPac Tournament on the campus of Longwood University Saturday morning.
The Wildcats finish the season with a 9-13 overall record. California claims third place in the NorPac Tournament with an 8-12 mark.
Playing in her final game for the Wildcats, Evans led the way with six shots, while fellow senior Finley Amato had two shots, both of which came on goal. Anna Davis added a pair as well.
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Fisher came up with nine saves in the contest.
Lara Kruggel had a pair of goals for the Bears, while Rachelle Comeau notched a pair of assists to lead the offense. Courtney Hendrickson and Joelle van Hoorn combined for three saves in the game.
Kendra Bills started the scoring early for the Bears, tallying a goal off of a pass from Comeau to give Cal the 1-0 lead ten minutes into the contest. Kruggel converted on a penalty stroke near the end of the period as the Bears took a 2-0 lead at the half.
Caroline Struijk picked up a rebound off a corner and knocked it past Fisher for the score early in the second half, while Kruggel added her second of the game ten minutes later when she redirected a Shannon Elmitt shot. Elmitt added another assist soon after, sending a pass over to Jordan O'Reilly who scored from the left side of the cage as the Bears took a 5-0 lead.
A minute later, Claire Dougherty sent a pass from Comeau into the back of the net to make it a 6-0 contest. A pair of shots by Davis and Evans went wide down the other end before Evans was awarded a penalty stroke. She successfully put it past Cal keeper van Hoorn to put the Wildcats on the board.
