FARMVILLE, Va. – Freshman forward Anna Davis scored twice to advance the Davidson field hockey team to the semifinals of the 2012 NorPac Tournament with a 2-1 win over UC Davis in Thursday's quarterfinals at the Athletics Complex at Longwood University.

The 2012 season marks the second consecutive season the 'Cats (9-11, 5-3 NorPac) have defeated the Aggies (7-12, 3-3) in the opening round of play. Davidson took last season's game by a score of 4-1 and moves to 5-0 vs. UC Davis with this season's victory.

Davis put the Wildcats up 1-0 with less than four minutes to play in the first half. Finley Amato sent a pass over to the left corner of the cage, and Davis tipped it in past UC Davis goalkeeper Conley Craven for the score.  Nadia Namdari attempted to even the score towards the end of the half, but Sarah Fisher came up with the save to keep the 'Cats in front.

Amato came out firing in the second half, but had a trio of shots blocked early on.  Brooke Osborne also had a strong attempt, but could not get past Craven.  Craven came up with the pair of saves on Amato, while Fisher did the same down the other end on a shot by Lydia Brambila.

Davidson was finally able to pad the lead with six minutes left in the game. It was again Davis for the score, this time dribbling in to the circle and firing off a hard shot to give the 'Cats the 2-0 advantage.

The Aggies got on the board three minutes later, cutting the Wildcat lead to 2-1. Casey Wolbrinck took a pass off of a penalty corner by Cloey LemMon and Kelly Dudek and put it past Sarah Fisher. However, Fisher would not surrender a goal the rest of the game as the 'Cats took the win.

“I'm proud of what we put together today,” said head coach Ginny Turner. “We had some great offensive movement. We will need to play better team defense tomorrow, but I'm excited for our next opportunity and hope we will build on the momentum from today. Anna (Davis) was a key to our success today and her chemistry with Finley (Amato) was impressive. Fisher had another fantastic game and showed why she was voted Defensive Player of the Year. She helped us keep them off the board until almost the end of the game”

Amato, who took over sole possession of first place in Davidson history with her 24th career assist, led the Wildcats with seven shots in the game. Davis scored on both of her shots, and Annie Evans recorded two attempts as Davidson outshot UC Davis 14-10. Named the NorPac East Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday evening, Fisher made six saves in the contest.

Namdari led the Aggies with three total shots and two shots on goal. Seven different UC Davis players recorded a shot apiece and the Aggies out-cornered the 'Cats 6-4. Craven made five saves in the game.

Davidson will play in the semifinals on Friday afternoon. They are set to take on the winner of the Liberty/Pacific game in a 1:30 p.m. match up.
