SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Freshman Becca Fisher (Fredricksburg, Va.) helped Davidson continue its recent dominance of Wofford by recording her first career two-goal game as the Wildcats earned their first Southern Conference win of the season with a 3-1 triumph on Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field.
The win pushed Davidson's (3-5-2, 1-1 SoCon) unbeaten streak recently vs. Wofford to nine games (6-0-3) as it has outscored the Terriers 16-4 during that span. Wofford, which opened the year with seven straight wins, suffered its first defeat of the season. The Terriers fell to 7-1 with a 1-1 league mark.
The Wildcats made sure their unbeaten streak in the series would continue by coming out of the gates fast. They struck for their 19th goal of the year courtesy of the freshman Fisher in the second minute of the game. Fellow freshman Stephanie Piperno (Harwinton, Conn.) sent a ball to the top of the box, where Fisher gathered it in and sent a shot to the right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
It was Fisher's second goal of the season, while Piperno earned her first collegiate assist.
The freshman forward struck again five minutes before the end of the first half, knocking in her third goal of the year with a shot from the top of the box to the far left post for a 2-0 Davidson lead.
The scoring continued into the second half for the 'Cats as junior Rachael Newmister (Clover, S.C.) and freshman Rachel Stelter (The Woodlands, Texas) hooked up on a free kick in the 54th minute. Stelter sent the free kick into the box, where Newmister kicked it past Wofford's goalkeeper Erika Christensen to put the Wildcats in command at 3-0.
Stelter pushed her team-best assist total to three, while Newmister's goal was the sixth of her career.
Freshman keeper Rachel Locke (Carlsbad, Calif.) and the defense took care of the rest, assisting Locke in earning her second career win between the pipes. She rebounded after a tough outing on Friday at Furman, allowing just one goal in 90 minutes and came up with a pair of saves. She lowed her goals against average to 1.01, ranking in the top-three of the SoCon.
Davidson put five of its 13 shots on goal, while Wofford had nine shots with three of them on goal, including Emily Bougas' ninth goal of the year.
The Wildcats return home for a four-game stretch of league games, starting on Friday, Sept. 30 vs. Elon at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The win for Davidson was its 101st in SoCon play during the program's 18-year run in the league ... head coach Greg Ashton is just 18 wins away from reaching 100 during his time at Davidson ... Fisher's three shots pushed her team lead to 28 on the year ... Davidson improved its all-time record vs. Wofford to 14-3-3.
