DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Wildcats look for their first win of the 2011 season on Wednesday when they host ACC-foe Virginia Tech at Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse action.
The Opening Draw Control
Davidson (0-2), in the midst of opening the season playing six of its first eight games at home, welcomes the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-0) to town on Wednesday evening for a 6 p.m. contest. The Hokies are off to their best start since 2006.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
Both teams have faced each other 15 times since the first meeting in 1995. Tech holds an 11-4 advantage over the Wildcats, having won the last five games.
Last year in Blacksburg, Va., the Hokies opened up a 16-4 lead after one period and Davidson was never able to recover in falling 22-8. Scoring for the 'Cats were Jen Crawford and Haley Cook with a pair of goals each, while Erin Keitel, Jenna Mugele, Emily Rahill and Anna Smith each score a goal apiece. Crawford picked up the 'Cats lone two assists.
Last Time Out...
... Davidson — Navy had four players score multiple goals, led by Jasmine DePompeo's five, and the Mids sent Davidson to its first road loss of the 2011 season as they took a 15-5 decision on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats (0-2) fell behind 9-1 after the first half and were never able to recover in falling for the second year in a row to Navy.
Erin Keitel scored three of Davidson's five goals, getting two of them in the final two minutes of the game. Alanna Parker netted the other two to push her season total to five. She has netted at least one goal in her last nine straight games.
Freshman Paige Logan led Davidson with her first three career groundballs, while seniors Taylor Ketcham and Lauren Vanhusen followed with two each.
Parker hauled in a career-best nine draw controls to give the Wildcats a 12-10 edge in that column.
Between the pipes, Jessica Melby (Pittsburgh, Pa.) stopped a career-high seven shots.
... Virginia Tech — The Virginia Tech women's lacrosse team held on for a big 18-8 defeat of Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon. The Hokies have never lost to the Blue Hose and are 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 2006.
Despite a sluggish start, Tech dominated the first half of play. Junior Ryan Rotanz highlighted the first half as she tallied four goals in the first 30 minutes.
PC's Brianne Ward challenged the early Tech lead when she put in a free position shot of her own to make it 2-1 in the first five minutes.
The Hokies pulled away, though, not allowing the Blue Hose to score again until just before halftime to make the score 13-2.
Senior attacker Allie Emala extended her scoring streak to seven games after scoring two goals on the Blue Hose, and junior Jessica Nonn ended her 18-game streak with one assist but no goals in the game.
Sophomore Alex Gale got the start in goal and played the first 30 minutes, but was relieved but classmate Alexis Carey in the second half. The pair combined for five saves in the game. Katelyn Luker also saw action in cage towards the end of the game.
