WHAT'S AT STAKE: Both teams are looking to advance in the SoCon Tournament Nov. 11 and 13 to be hosted by Appalachian State in the ASU Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. The semifinal matches will be held Friday at 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., while the championship match (to be broadcast on ESPN3.com) will take place Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The winner of No. 5 Appalachian State vs. No. 4 Davidson will play the winner of the No. 8 Wofford vs. No. 1 UNCG game (Saturday at 7 p.m.) in the 4:00 p.m. semifinal match.
RUDE GUESTS: Davidson is looking to eliminate the SoCon tournament host for the second consecutive year. The 'Cats earned a first-round win over College of Charleston last season, eliminating the Cougars before they hosted the tournament in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
WELCOME BACK: This will be Appalachian State's fourth match (out of 18) on the pitch at Alumni Stadium. The Mountaineers competed against Gardner-Webb (T, 0-0) and Detroit (W, 2-0) in the Davidson adidas Classic in early September and then took on the Wildcats Oct. 29, falling to Davidson, 3-0.
HOME SWEET HOME: Davidson is 5-4-1 in Alumni Stadium this season and is hosting a SoCon quarterfinal game for the first time since 2005. The 'Cats won the regular season title that season, but had been unable to crack the top four in the league since. The 'Cats are playing their seventh consecutive home game.
QUARTERFINAL SUCCESS: Davidson ended a quarterfinal drought on the road last season with a win at regular season tri-champion College of Charleston. The 'Cats had not advanced past the first round since 2005, while the Cougars had spent a week ranked in the Top 25 nationally that season and were an at-large selection to the NCAA tournament.
SCOUTING APPALACHIAN STATE: The Mountaineers rode an 11-game unbeaten streak that began at the Davidson adidas Classic, but it was snapped with back-to-back conference losses to Wofford and Davidson Oct. 25 and 29, respectively. App had to fail score in four consecutive games, earning scoreless draws with College of Charleston and Furman prior to the Wofford and Davidson losses, but the Mountaineers earned a 1-0 double overtime win Tuesday over East Tennessee State to conclude the regular season. ASU is a tough defensive squad, ranking eighth in the nation in goals against average (0.59) and 10th in the nation in shutout percentage (0.56). Both stats lead the conference. Goalkeeper Danny Free is 13th in the nation and second in the conference with a .840 save percentage. Sean Dreybus leads the team in scoring with 13 points (6g, 1a).
THE SERIES: App. State had won the last three meetings against the 'Cats before Davidson earned a 3-0 win last Saturday. The 2006 and 2007 matches were 1-1 draws. Davidson had last prevailed over the Mountaineers in 2005, 2-1 at home.
LAST MEETING: DAVIDSON, N.C. (Oct. 29, 2011) – A pair of seniors scored for Davidson and senior goalkeeper Chip Sanders earned his team-record ninth shutout of the season to lead the Wildcats past Appalachian State, 3-0 in Southern Conference men's soccer action Saturday night in Alumni Stadium. Senior defender Dennis Shannon made his senior night extra special by scoring his first-career goal. Shannon notched the game-winner just before halftime in the 44th minute. Sanders made a big save on a shot by Sean Dreybus in the 52nd minute to preserve the 1-0 lead. The 'Cats then added to the advantage with goals in the 60th and 75th minutes.
THREE'S COMPANY: Five different players lead the team with three goals each: Brian McGue, Chris Pettiglio, Jake Keator, Thomas Zimmerman and Max Riehemann. McGue also has four assists to lead the team with 10 points. 11 different players have scored Davidson's 24 goals this season, while 16 have tallied at least one point (goal or assist).
MOVING UP: Chip Sanders is third all-time at Davidson in career shutouts with 17 after earning his team record, career high and SoCon-leading ninth shutout of the season against Appalachian State. Alex Deegan (1991-95) and Soren Johnson (1999-02) are the record holders with 20 shutouts. Sanders' 17 shutouts also tie him for 10th all-time in the Southern Confernce.
BLUE-CHIP KEEPER: Senior GK Chip Sanders drew national accolades for his shutouts of No. 2 North Carolina and Wofford. Both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Soccer America recognized him as the nation's player of the week for the week ending Oct. 23. He was recognized as the top-performing goalkeeper in the nation by College Soccer News, as he was named to the website's “National Team of the Week.” CollegeSoccer360.com recognized him as one of 12 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Primetime Performers for games Oct. 17-23. He was also named the SoCon Men's Soccer Player of the Week.
ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT: Senior D Greg Macnamara was named to the Capital One Academic All-District team for a second consecutive season. This year he made the first team, so he is eligible to be picked for Academic All-America honors. The math and economics double major was one of 30 NCAA men's soccer student-athletes named as a candidate for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in collegiate men's soccer earlier in the year.
RANKED IN THE SOUTH: Davidson is ranked eighth in the NSCAA South Region, one place ahead of Appalachian State. No. 19 Furman is the top-ranked SoCon team in the region in fourth place, while regular season champion UNCG is in a three-way tie for 10th place.
BLANKED: The 'Cats picked up their ninth shutout of the season against Appalachian State. They had six shutouts all of last season, while the team record is 10 (2003). The Wildcats presently rank second in the conference to App in shutout percentage and 15th in the nation at 0.53. Davidson did not allow a goal in the first two games of the season after opening with a 2-0 win at Air Force and following with a 0-0 draw at No. 19 Denver. The last time the Wildcats opened the season with back-to-back shutouts was in 1999. Davidson has earned back-to-back shutouts on two occasions this season (Gardner-Webb and Winthrop, UNC and Wofford) but has yet to string three consecutive shutouts together. The 'Cats last accomplished that feat last season in a string of three conference games against Wofford, Furman and UNCG. The Wofford game was a 3-0 win, while the other two matches were scoreless draws.
UPSET OF THE YEAR: TopDrawerSoccer.com wrote: “Davidson & Goliath: Davidson, North Carolina, may not carry the same kind of athletic clout as, say, Chapel Hill, but for one night it was the center of the college soccer universe. Davidson pulled off an eye-opening 1-0 victory over No. 2 North Carolina on Monday in the upset heard round the country. The Tar Heels thoroughly controlled the game, outshooting the Wildcats 16-3, but couldn't convert any of their chances. Davidson did convert, getting a 25-yard strike from Jake Keator in the 81st minute on a shot that ensured his place in Davidson soccer lore.”
SHOCK THE NATION: Davidson earned its first win over a Top-10 team since 2009 when the Wildcats earned a convincing 4-1 win over then-No. 6 Duke at Alumni Stadium. Davidson also defeated No. 25 South Carolina earlier in 2009.
DID YOU SEE THAT Jake Keator's game-winning goal garnered national attention as the YouTube video was embedded on several national soccer publications and was aired on ESPN2's SportsNation. It presently has over 16,000 views on YouTube. It is by far the most-watched video on the Davidson YouTube channel (youtube.com/davidsonathletics) as men's basketball's double overtime win over Elon in 2009 has garnered just under 4,000 views in about a year and a half. The video has a long way to go to reach the Clemson-Davidson baseball rain delay video hosted by Clemson. That video has over 714,000 views.
RECORD CROWD: An Alumni Stadium record crowd of 1,914 witnessed the win over No. 2 UNC. The previous record was 1,714, set Oct. 24, 2009 against Wofford.
GOING THE DISTANCE: Davidson has played in four overtime games this season: a 0-0 draw at Denver in the second game of the season, a 3-2 double OT win over Elon, a 0-0 draw at UNCG, and a 2-2 draw against CofC. After having not one tie in 2009, Davidson had six in 2010, going 1-0-6 in seven overtime games, including two that were scoreless. The 'Cats have not lost an overtime game since 2009 (Oct. 10 at Elon, 1-2), and are 4-1-9 in overtime the past three seasons.
