DAVIDSON, N.C. - Boubacar Toure scored in the 82nd minute and in the 88th minute on a penalty kick to lead Appalachian State past Davidson, 2-0, in the first round of the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship tournament Sunday night in Alumni Stadium.
Fourth-seeded Davidson (8-8-3, 3-2-2 SoCon) outshot fifth-seeded Appalachian State (10-4-4, 3-2-2 SoCon) 15-7 in the second half and 21-14 for the game, but was unable to score on Mountaineers' goalkeeper Danny Free, who made eight saves to earn his eighth shutout of the season and the team's 10th.
Toure's goal in the 82nd minute came off a long ball from defender Mark Bridges, and Toure was able to score from close range. A foul call on Davidson in the 18-yard box in the 88th minute gave Toure a penalty kick opportunity, which he converted for the final 2-0 margin.
Appalachian State will take on top seed UNCG in the SoCon semifinals Friday, while the loss ends Davidson's season.
Senior Allen Page led Davidson with six shots, creating several scoring opportunities for the Wildcats. Sophomore Chris Pettiglio had a pair of shots, including one that just sailed high with 28 minutes remaining.
Senior goalkeeper Chip Sanders made a pair of big saves late in the second half, and ultimately finished with four for the game. Senior defender Greg Macnamara made several defensive plays to disrupt Appalachian State's attack.
