JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville quarterback Josh McGregor rolled up 399 yards of total offense, and the Dolphins scored four touchdowns in 6:56 of the second half en route to a 56-13 Pioneer Football League victory over Davidson Saturday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field.
It was a PFL record 16th-straight conference win for Jacksonville, topping the old mark of 15, set by San Diego from 2005-07. It was also the Dolphins' 13th consecutive home win.
Jonathan Carkhuff completed 34-of-58 passes for 290 yards and a touchdown for Davidson (2-5, 0-4 PFL). Lanny Funsten posted a career-high 11 receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown. Chris Trinetti caught five passes for a career-high 62 yards, and Trey Huelskamp had career highs of six receptions and 47 yards.
McGregor rushed for 104 yards and threw for 295 and four scores for Jacksonville (6-2, 5-0 PFL). Larry Thompson had five receptions for 110 yards and three TDs.
Lacy McDougald's two interceptions led to two touchdowns in 1:09 to break open a 14-7 game in the 3rd quarter. He returned his first pick 25 yards to the Davidson 30-yard line. McGregor then hit Thompson for a 21-yard TD pass on 4th-and-1.
Two plays later, McDougald picked off a Carkhuff pass and went 59 yards for a touchdown and a 28-7 Jacksonville lead with 2:47 left in the period. D'Andre Randle iced the game with a 94-yard punt return for touchdown 32 seconds into the fourth quarter, and McGregor connected with Tommie Rogers for a 40-yard TD pass with 12:00 remaining.
“One thing led to another and it really unraveled on us,” said Davidson coach Tripp Merritt. “They are a very good football team and very athletic. I was pleased with the play of some of our young receivers, and I thought Lanny made some all-conference-type catches.”
Trailing 14-0, Davidson got on the scoreboard late in the first half as the Wildcats got the ball at their own 20 with 1:33 on the clock. Carkhuff completed 8-of-9 passes for all 80 yards and capped the drive with a 9-yard pass to Funsten to make the margin 14-7 with 11.4 seconds left. Trinetti had 47 receiving yards in the drive, including consecutive receptions of 21 and 18 yards.
A 60-yard scramble by McGregor on 3rd-and-10 set up the Dolphins' first score, a 20-yard pass to Thompson just 2:56 into the game.
Jacksonville opened a 14-0 cushion early in the second quarter with a 14-play, 96-yard drive that ate 7:15 off the clock. Davidson thought it had a fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchback, but officials ruled receiver Dorian Guy down at the 1-yard line after a 9-yard gain. J.J. Laster punched it in two plays later.
The Wildcats return home to host Campbell in a PFL contest at Richardson Stadium next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., and it's Parents Weekend.
Game Notes: Chase Culbertson scored his second TD of the season… Davidson has lost three straight against Jacksonville… The 'Cats TD in the second quarter broke an offensive scoring drought that lasted 13 quarters; the 'Cats had a punt return for TD against Marist… Davidson plays three of its final four games at home.
