DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior Finley Amato scored two unanswered goals to lead Davidson past Longwood, 2-1, in NorPac field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.

Amato scored in the ninth minute to tie the game at 1-1, and broke the tie in the 62nd minute with an unassisted goal. Davidson improves to 5-4 with the win in their first NorPac field hockey conference match of the year, while Longwood fell to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the NorPac.

“I'm excited to get our first NorPac conference win of the year and I thought Finley played a great game,” said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. “It was a great team effort, and we did a good job controlling the possession throughout the game.”

Longwood struck first in the eighth minute, as Amanda Babineau collected the rebound off a shot by Stacey de Grandhomme and was able to score from just outside the left post.

The Lancers' lead was short-lived though, as the Wildcats answered just over a minute later on their first penalty corner attempt of the game. Junior Annie Evans started the play and senior Gray Robinson directed the ball to Amato, who blasted it from the top of the circle into the back of the cage.

Davidson controlled the possession for much of the game, ultimately finishing with a 15-5 advantage in shots and an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners, but was unable to score for the next 51 minutes. A Longwood turnover in their defensive zone in the 62nd minute gave Amato a one-on-one opportunity with a Lancer defender for the game-winner.  Amato was able to take advantage of the extra space and score with a close-range shot from the right.

Amato led Davidson with seven shots, five of which were on goal, while senior Hannah English also had three shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Fisher made two stops for the 'Cats, while her counterpart for Longwood, Kaye Goulding, made nine saves.

The Wildcats will play another NorPac conference game Tuesday night at Appalachian State and then play their next three games on the road. Their next home match is Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. against Liberty.

Notes: The two-goal game was the fifth of Amato's career … Amato leads the team in scoring with 15 points (6g, 3a) … Annie Evans is second with nine points (3g, 3a) … Davidson improved to 12-8-1 all-time against Longwood.
