Field Hockey Earns Second-Straight Conference Win

BOONE, N.C. – Finley Amato posted her second consecutive two-goal game to lead Davidson past Appalachian State, 3-1, in NorPac field hockey action Tuesday night at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Amato broke a 1-1 tie in the 25th minute and added an insurance goal in the 68th minute to secure the win for the Wildcats (6-4, 2-0 NorPac). The Mountaineers (1-10, 1-2 NorPac) scored the game's first goal in the ninth minute, but sophomore Tyler McFayden tied the game for Davidson at 1-1 in the 14th minute.

"We are thrilled to get the second conference win," said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. "We stepped up strong defensively, only allowing two corners. Tyler and Finley did a great job finding the back of the cage and I have to give a lot of credit to Christine Rua for our offensive movement."

Amato's game-winning goal came on a shot from the middle of the field from 10-yards out after a pass from senior Hannah English. Freshman Julia Guthrie earned her first-career point assisting Amato's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Davidson held a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners, but App. State was successful in their lone first-half opportunity, as Kelly Allaband scored with Jessi Stuart earning the assist. The lead was short-lived though as senior Christine Rua found McFayden for her second-career goal to even the game.

"App did a great job of coming out strong and scoring first, but I was glad we are able to answer right back," said Turner. "Once we finally put the ball in the cage I felt like we started to control the game more and play with more confidence on the field turf."

Junior goalkeeper Sarah Fisher went largely untested, making two saves as ASU fired 10 shots, three of which were on goal. Amato fired seven of Davidson's 22 shots, and ASU goalkeeper Bridgette Street made 10 saves.

"We had a lot of opportunities, but Street had a great game," said Turner. "Overall, it was a great win and we are looking forward to our next two non-conference games."

Davidson will next travel to the campus of the University of Richmond Saturday for a neutral site match against Saint Louis set to start at 3 p.m. The Wildcats will then face Wake Forest Tuesday, Oct. 11 and NorPac foe Radford Friday, Oct. 14 before returning to Belk Turf Field to take on Liberty Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1:00 p.m.
