DAVIDSON, N.C. – Annie Evans' second half goal proved to be the game-winner, as the Davidson field hockey team improved to 3-0 with a 3-2 win over Towson Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.
Evans' goal came with 17:30 remaining to break a 2-2 tie. Junior Christine Rua (Pittsburgh, Pa.) started the play, getting the ball in front of the cage to classmate Gray Robinson (Lousiville, Ky.). The ball went off Robinson's stick and Evans (Lake Forest, Ill.) was there for the score.
Rua scored the game's first goal 6:42 in, deflecting a blast from the top of the circle by junior Hannah English (Louisville, Ky.) past Towson (0-2) goalkeeper Whitney Clugston. Katie DeFilippo evened the score though at 18:14.
Robinson put the 'Cats back on top at 25:39, but Blythe Mackie responded less than 50 seconds later to even the match at two.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher was strong in the cage for the 'Cats, making four saves and several plays to control loose balls in front. Clugston made six saves, while Megan Penza and Alicia Vincently both recorded defensive saves.
Senior Jennie Mostellar (New Bern, N.C.) kept the pressure on Towson, taking six of Davidson's 19 shots. The 'Cats finished with a 19-12 advantage in the category after outshooting Towson 12-4 in the first half.
Davidson returns to action Sunday, traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C. for a neutral site match against Lafayette.
Notes: Rua is tied for second on the team with three goals … this is the first time Davidson has started a season 3-0 since 2001.
