WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcat field hockey team remains undefeated after getting its third shutout of the season, a 3-0 victory over the Lafayette Leopards Sunday afternoon in a neutral-site game at Wake Forest's Ketner Stadium.

Davidson (4-0), who opened the weekend with a 3-2 victory over Towson after shutting out Bryant and St. Francis the previous weekend, is off to its best start ever under head coach Ginny Sutton Turner and the team's best since 1999, when the Wildcats also started the season 4-0.

Lafayette drops to 0-2 after a 3-2 loss to the No. 6 Wake Forest Demon Deacons Saturday.

"I am proud of the team's effort this weekend," Turner said. "We beat two solid teams in Towson and Lafayette. Today's was a very competitive game, but we played together and with heart. Sarah Fisher had a great game in the cage, and Hannah Lawrence's defensive save was huge. We worked together all over the field and never gave up for 70 minutes."

Statistically, the two teams finished fairly even, with the Leopards just edging the Wildcats on shots, 16-13. Both teams took six corners, though Davidson earned all six of its in the second half and scored both second-half goals on corner plays.

Sophomore forward Finley Amato paced the 'Cats with four shots and put Davidson on the scoreboard in the 19th minute. Lafayette keeper Kelsey Andersen got one of her four saves on a shot by senior forward Jennie Mostellar, but Amato gathered in the rebound, and the 'Cats carried a 1-0 lead into half-time.

Each team had seven shots in the second half, but it was the Wildcats who converted, adding a pair of late-game goals to clinch victory. Amato got involved in the scoring again, taking a shot from the top of the circle on a corner in the 65th minute that was tapped in by junior forward Christine Rua. Davidson added an insurance goal in the final minute of play as Mostellar scored on a pass from junior Gray Robinson in a scramble after the Wildcats' final corner.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (4-0) earned her third shutout of the season, finishing with nine saves in all 70 minutes in the cage.

The Wildcats look to continue their streak when they travel to William & Mary Friday for a 4 p.m. game, before taking on Penn in a neutral-site game Sunday at 2 p.m.
