William & Mary Ends Field Hockey's Winning Streak

9/10/2010 6:12:27 PM | Field Hockey

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Three early second half goals and strong goalkeeping led William & Mary past Davidson, 5-3, ending the Wildcat field hockey team's four-game winning streak Friday afternoon at Busch Field.

William & Mary (2-3) goalkeeper Camilla Hill made 10 saves, while Maria Caro made a defensive save on Davidson's first shot attempt of the game. Ashley Kyle led William & Mary with two goals and an assist, while Danielle Scissom, Caro and Elizabeth Loudy also scored. Erica Eng added two helpers.

Sophomore forward Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.), junior midfielder Gray Robinson (Louisville, Ky.) and junior forward Christine Rua (Pittsburgh, Pa.) all scored goals for Davidson (4-1), which outshot William & Mary, 17-12.

William & Mary broke a 2-2 tie just under two-and-a-half minutes into the second half, as Kyle deflected a shot from Eng into the cage. Caro scored off a penalty corner with Eng tallying another assist just over four minutes later. Hill then stopped a Davidson penalty stroke attempt and Kyle gave the Tribe a three-goal advantage in the 45th minute, scoring on a breakaway setup by Allison Moran.

“We did not play our best and William & Mary capitalized on that,” said Davidson head coach Ginny Turner. “We outshot and out cornered them, but we had breakdowns which led to goals. We have a lot to learn from this game and we can build from our mistakes and be ready for Penn on Sunday.”

Rua pulled the 'Cats back within two in the 49th minute after tipping in a shot from junior forward Hannah English (Louisville, Ky.) off a penalty corner attempt, but Hill made five saves over the remainder of the game for the win.

Davidson outshot William & Mary, 9-5, in the first half, but the Tribe were able to stay with the 'Cats on the scoreboard.

Amato knocked in the rebound off a shot by Robinson to give the Wildcats the lead 18:06 into the game. William & Mary answered just over three minutes later as Kyle found Loudy in front of the cage, and Loudy played it off sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher's (Fredericksburg, Va.) pads to even the match at one.

Robinson put the 'Cats back on top in the 29th minute. Hill came out of the cage to challenge Mostellar but Robinson was able to get behind Hill, and Mostellar found her with a pass for the goal.

The Tribe evened the match just before the halftime break though with a goal from Danielle Scissom assisted by Rebecca Wagner.

The Wildcats will stay in Williamsburg, where they will face Penn in a neutral site contest Sunday at 2 p.m.

Notes: Davidson has improved dramatically offensively in 2010, scoring three or more goals in each of the first five games after only scoring three-plus goals five times in 19 games in 2009 … Amato has already surpassed her rookie season scoring totals (4g, 1a, 9 pts.) and is currently tied for the team lead in scoring with five goals and two assists for 12 points … Mostellar, an All-NorPac selection last season, is just two points shy of equaling her 2009 total of 14 points, matching Amato's scoring totals … Rua has now scored five goals in five games after scoring three in her first 39 career games … Davidson head coach Ginny Turner is a William & Mary field hockey alum, and captained the squad during her senior season.
