SoCon Play Begins, Davidson Plays Host to Furman and Wofford This Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson begins its quest for the program's fourth regular-season Southern Conference title, and first since 2005, when the Wildcats host Furman and Wofford this weekend at Alumni Stadium in women's soccer action.
The Matchup
Finishing up its non-conference slate of games last Sunday, Davidson begins Southern Conference play with a pair of contests against Furman and Wofford this Friday, Sept. 24, and Sunday, Sept. 26. Gametimes are set for 7 and 2 p.m.

The All-Time Series
Davidson trails the all-time series by the count of 8-16-2 against Furman. But, the Wildcats have won two of the last three meetings, including last year's 1-0 home triumph. The 'Cats hold a 13-3-2 mark against Wofford and are riding a seven-game unbeaten streak in the last seven meetings (5-0-2). Last year they blanked the Terriers 4-0 at home.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson (4-4, 0-0 SoCon) moved to .500 last Sunday with its fourth shutout win of the season, a 2-0 victory vs. Winthrop ... the 'Cats remained perfect at home with the win, 3-0 ... the four shutouts tie Davidson with Wofford, Samford and Furman for most in the SoCon ... Callan Elswick scored her first goal of the season in the win ... Allison Drutchas (preseason All-SoCon pick) picked up her team-leading fourth assist of the season on Sunday ... Deprise Brazel paces the team with six points on a team-high three goals ... Drutchas is next with five points (1 gl, 4 asts) ... in last year's meeting vs. the Paladins, Elswick was credited with the game-winning assist ... in each of Davidson's last six games against Furman, they have all been decided by a single goal ... Drutchas and Elizabeth Underwood each netted a goal in the 'Cats 4-0 vs. Wofford ... the 'Cats have outscored the Terriers 11-1 in the last seven meetings ... goalkeeper Jessie Baxa earned her third shutout in the win vs. Winthrop ... she has 40 saves, fourth-most in the SoCon, including a career-high 10 she registered vs. Charlotte ... Davidson's 3-0 home start is their best since the 2007 squad won their first four home games ... 16 letterwinners return this year – eight of those being starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team ... Davidson was picked to finish fourth in the SoCon preseason poll ... Elswick was named one of 30 women's soccer senior players to be nominated to the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
Scouting the Paladins
Furman (5-3, 0-0 SoCon) has been off since Sept. 15 when it last played at home against UNC Asheville, taking a 4-1 decision ... the win was the Paladins' 100th all-time at home ... prior to that game, Furman played at the Carolinas' Cup hosted by South Carolina, going 1-1 at the tournament ... Rachel Shelnutt leads the league in points (15), goals (5- tied 1st) and assists (5) ... Martha Hall is tied with Shelnutt in goals with five and has 10 points, good for fourth in the SoCon ... goalkeeper Jessica Smith has started all eight games and allowed just six goals total ... her 0.73 goals against average ranks second and her four shutouts are first in the SoCon ... Furman is second in the league with 20 goals and 59 points as a team ... five starters and 12 letterwinners return in all from last year's 10-8 squad ... the Paladins were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll and Hall was a preseason all-league pick.
Scouting the Terriers
Wofford (5-2, 0-0 SoCon) rattled off its third straight win last Sunday with a 9-0 blanking of Converse ... seven different players scored in the game, including a hat trick by Ellen Ezekiel ... Ezekiel and Emily Bougas are second on the team with four goals ... Nikki Siebert paces the team with 10 points (3 gls, 4 asts) ... she is tied for second in assists in the SoCon ... Katie McChesney and Erika Christensen have split starts in goal for the Terriers ... they have combined for 18 saves ... Wofford leads the league with 23 goals and 60 points ... 17 letterwinners return ... the Terriers were picked to finish 11th in the SoCon after going 3-6-2 a year ago.
