CHARLESTON, S.C. — All-tournament team pick freshman Deprise Brazel (San Diego, Calif.) netted her third goal of the weekend, but the Davidson Wildcats were unable to halt the Iowa Hawkeyes' winning streak in falling 3-1 on the final day of the College of Charleston women's soccer tournament on Sunday.
Iowa earned the tournament title with 2-0 and 4-0 wins over host CofC and Davidson to run its record to 6-1 as it continued its six-game winning streak. Five of the six wins have been shutouts. For Davidson (3-4), it was its first loss in the tournament after taking home the title in 2007.
Iowa struck early as Dana Dalrymple gave her team a quick 1-0 lead just 2:55 into the start of the game. She chipped a shot over the head of goalkeeper Jessie Baxa (Bloomfield, Mich.) for her third goal of the season. Dalrymple later added an assist in the second half.
Davidson settled down and held the Hawkeyes scoreless the rest of the half. The 'Cats tried to tie things up in the 17th minute when they got a header from Stephanie Gerow (Houston, Texas) off a corner kick, but the shot was saved by Emily Moran of Iowa in goal.
The second half started with Iowa tacking on its second goal at the 57:30 mark with Jade Grimm scoring the game-winner. The Hawkeyes then added one more goal in the 64th minute for a 3-0 lead.
Brazel broke up the shutout for Davidson and capped off a solid weekend for herself, with a goal 18 seconds into the 89th minute. After fellow classmate Tori Krause (Cary, N.C.) got off a shot, the ball was loose and there was a scramble for it. The forward gathered in the rebound, controlled the ball and knocked it through for her third score of the season. Two days prior, Brazel had her first career two-goal collegiate game in a win over Presbyterian.
For her excellent weekend effort, Brazel was named to the all-tournament team along with senior Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) as the two represented Davidson on the team. Drutchas registered her third assist of the season on Friday night against the Blue Hose.
In goal, Baxa played all 90 minutes and earned six saves, while Moran finished with two saves in 83 minutes for Iowa and Kali Feiereisel finished out the game with one save.
The Wildcats got off eight shots on the afternoon and earned two corner kicks, while Iowa had 14 shots and three corners.
The Wildcats now return home to the friendly confines of Alumni Stadium after their four-game road swing and will play Winthrop on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. They opened last season at Winthrop and took home a 3-1 decision.
GAME NOTES: Davidson finished 1-3 on its four-game road swing ... Davidson and Iowa were playing for the first time in program history ... Brazel's three goals over the weekend gives her the team lead in goals and points (6) ... Krause's assist was the first of her collegiate career.
