'Cats Play Host to State-Border Rival Winthrop Eagles on Sunday

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Fresh off a 1-1 weekend at the College of Charleston Tournament, Davidson comes home to take on the Winthrop Eagles on Sunday at Alumni Stadium in women's soccer action.

The Matchup
Returning home for the first time since Aug. 29, Davidson will host its state-border rival the Winthrop Eagles on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. in the first of three straight home games.     

The All-Time Series
Davidson is unbeaten with a 2-0-1 mark in the series, which dates back to 2005. Last year saw the Wildcats open the 2009 campaign with a 3-1 road win vs. the Eagles.

Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson (3-4) closed out its four-game road swing with a 1-1 mark this past weekend at the College of Charleston Tournament ... the 'Cats scored a 3-0 win over Presbyterian, before falling to Iowa, 3-1 ... Deprise Brazel and Allison Drutchas were named to the all-tournament team ... Brazel had a weekend to remember, scoring her first three collegiate goals, including a two-goal game vs. the Blue Hose ... Drutchas (preseason All-SoCon pick) picked up her team-leading third assist of the season and is second on the team with five points, one behind Brazel's six points ... freshman Tori Krause earned the first assist of her career on Sunday vs. Iowa ... sophomore Stephanie Gerow tallied her first goal and assists of the season in the win on Friday ... the last time Gerow faced Winthrop last year, she registered a goal and an assist in the 3-1 road win ... senior Amanda Flink (preseason all-league pick) also scored against the Eagles last season ... goalkeeper Jessie Baxa has started all seven Wildcat games ... she has 37 saves, second-most in the SoCon, including a career-high 10 she registered vs. Charlotte ... Baxa's two shutouts are tied for fourth in the league ... Davidson is a perfect 2-0 at home this year, with shutout wins over UNC Wilmington and High Point ... 16 letterwinners return this year – eight of those being starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team ... Davidson was picked to finish fourth in the SoCon preseason poll ... senior Callan Elswick was named one of 30 women's soccer senior players to be nominated to the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.     

Scouting the Eagles
Winthrop (0-4-1) plays at home against Georgia State on Friday before traveling to Davidson on Sunday ... the Eagles are coming off a 2-1 double-overtime defeat to East Tennessee State at the ETSU Invitational this past weekend ... they also played Miami (Ohio) over the weekend, falling 2-0 ... Tricia Vensel leads the team with a pair of goals and assists for six points ... Allie Vandewater (team-best 3 asts.) and Megan Pritts (1 gl., 1 ast.) are second with three points each ... in goal, Sarah Schippers and Kelsy Weavil have started two and three games, respectively ... Weavil has a team-best 15 saves ... 22 letterwinners return from last year's 5-10-6 squad ... 10 of those returners are starters ... Winthrop women's soccer program is just seven years old since starting in 2003 ... head coach Spencer Smith is in his first year after serving as Radford's men's head coach the last 16 years where he is the all-time victories leader in program history.

Davidson remains at home and starts SoCon-play when it hosts Furman and Wofford next weekend, Sept. 24-26.
