'Cats Travel to Texas For First Time; Battle Nationally Ranked Texas A&M and SMU This Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Winners of two of their first three games to start the 2010 season, the Davidson women's soccer team will head to the state of Texas for the first time, playing No. 9 Texas A&M and Southern Methodist this weekend.
The Matchup
Davidson hits the road for what will be a four-game road trip. The Wildcats first head to the state of Texas for the first in program history to take on No. 9 Texas A&M on Friday, Sept. 3, before then going to Southern Methodist on Sunday, Sept. 5.
The All-Time Series
This will be the first time Davidson has faced either of its opponents this weekend.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson is off to a 2-1 start after scoring a 1-0 home win vs. High Point last Sunday ... the 'Cats have also faced Charlotte (L, 0-1) and UNC Wilmington (W, 2-0) ... the two shutout wins in the first three games to start this year is the first time Davidson has accomplished that since 2000 ... freshman Tori Krause headed in the game-winner against HPU on Sunday for her first collegiate goal ... Allison Drutchas (preseason All-SoCon pick) and freshman Kelsey Krueger have also scored this season, with Drutchas earning an assist on Krause's goal ... goalkeeper Jessie Baxa has earned both shutout wins to give her nine for her career ... Baxa leads the SoCon with two shutouts and a 0.33 goals against average ... she also has 18 saves, second-best in the league, including a career-high 10 she registered vs. Charlotte ... Sunday's win vs. High Point was head coach Greg Ashton's 75th during his time at Davidson ... dating back to the end of last year's regular season, the Wildcats are 8-1-1 ... 16 letterwinners return, with eight of them being starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team ... Davidson was picked to finish fourth in the SoCon preseason poll ... senior Callan Elswick was named one of 30 women's soccer senior players to be nominated to the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award ... last year saw the 'Cats go 5-7-1 away from Alumni Stadium.
Scouting the Aggies
Texas A&M is ranked No. 9 in the nation and off to a 3-1 start ... the Aggies earned a 1-0 shutout win vs. No. 21 Washington State last Sunday ... Alyssa Mautz netted the game-winning goal to top off a weekend in which she scored four combined goals against two ranked opponents, earning her a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week ... Mautz paces the team with five goals and 10 points, while Whitney Hooper is second with a pair of goals and assists for six points ... Texas A&M is riding a three-match win streak, with victories over WSU, Virginia Tech and St. John's ... Kristin Arnold has played all four games in goal, stopping 16 shots and earning two shutouts through in the first four games ... the Aggies return 19 letterwinners, including 11 starters from last year's team that advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament ... they have made the NCAA Tournament 15 straight years ... head coach G. Guerrieri has led the Aggies to 10 Big 12 regular season and tournament titles, and they have made 10 trips to the NCAA “Sweet Sixteen” and four to the “Elite Eight.”
Scouting the Mustangs
SMU, which plays St. Louis on Friday night before hosting Davidson, has gone 1-1-1 through its first three games ... it recently played to a 0-0 tie against Oregon last Sunday ... Lauren Shepherd has the lone goal on the season ... goalkeeper Courtney Webb has allowed just two goals in her three games, earning two shutouts and registering 16 saves ... the Mustangs finished 7-11-1 a year ago and advanced to the C-USA Tournament ... Kaitlyn Eidson was a C-USA preseason pick after earning second-team all-league honors last season.
Next on the Schedule
Davidson stays on the road and plays at the Coll. of Charleston Tournament, Sept. 10-12. The 'Cats will face off against Presbyterian and Iowa at the two-day tournament. The last time they were invited to the tournament, the Wildcats took home the title with big wins over Southeastern Conference schools LSU and Vanderbilt.
