DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson men's basketball freshman Jake Cohen has been named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year by the league's Sports Media Association, it was announced today.
The news comes a day after the SoCon coaches tabbed Cohen's teammate, Davidson guard JP Kuhlman, the Freshman of the Year in their poll. It's the first time the media association (began voting in 1978-79) has picked a different player for the award than the coaches (began voting in 1992-93). Even more noteworthy is that the two entities selected different players from the same team.
Cohen, who started 23 of 30 games for the Wildcats, leads all rookie scorers and ranks 10th in the league overall in scoring with 13.4 points a game. The 6-foot-10 forward also ranks 13th overall in rebounding (5.1 rpg), 12th in field goal percentage (.468) and seventh in blocked shots.
Kuhlman, who joined Cohen on the media association All-Freshman team, also started 23 of Davidson's 30 games during the regular season while averaging 12.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He is second only to Cohen among freshmen scorers while pacing SoCon rookies in assists, 3-point field goal percentage, assist/turnover ratio and minutes played. The media association began selecting an All-Freshman Team in 2008.
Cohen joins current assistant coach Landry Kosmalski (1997), Stephen Curry (2007) and Jamie Hall (1979) as the only Wildcats to claim the media association's Freshman of the Year accolade.
Davidson, which finished the regular season 16-14 overall and 11-7 in league play, takes on Elon in SoCon Tournament first-round action Friday at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
