CHARLESTON, S.C. — Seniors Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas) hooked up for their second goal of the week, but the Wildcats were unable to overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit in falling to The Citadel, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon in women's Southern Conference soccer action at WLI Field.
Davidson, coming off a 2-0 shutout win over College of Charleston on Thursday, fell to 5-8-3 overall and 1-4-3 in league action. The Citadel, off to its best start in SoCon history, ran its league mark to 6-2 and 10-5-1 overall.
Nicole Levermann recorded a hat trick to pace the Bulldogs to the SoCon win.
Down 2-0, Drutchas and Flink cut the deficit in half during the 64th minute. The duo who connected with each other on Thursday night off a free kick, did it again on Sunday, this time on a corner kick. Drutchas sent a perfect ball into the box where Flink raised up and headed the pass in for her third goal of the season.
Drutchas' assist on the goal was her team-best seventh of the season. Flink's third score of the year matches her with Drutchas and Deprise Brazel (San Diego, Calif.) for the team lead and the three-goal total matches her career-high.
Davidson tried to kick in the tying and go-ahead goals over the next 16 minutes, getting off five shots, including three straight in the 79th minute, but could not connect. Rachel Barnett (Raleigh, N.C.) and Flink each had a shot on goal, only to see them get stopped by goalkeeper Whitney Nave in the 72nd and 75th minutes, while Drutchas, Callan Elswick (Locust Grove, Va.) and Julie Calhoun (Palos Verdes, Calif.) each saw their shots go high or wide during the 79th minute.
Levermann, who got the Bulldogs out to a 2-0 advantage in the first half, sealed the win with her third goal of the game in the 86th minute. She pushed her season total to six goals.
Jessie Baxa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Renae Cairns (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) split time in goal, with Carins getting all three of Davidson's saves on goal.
The Wildcats held a 16-10 advantage in shots, putting nine of those on goal, and earned five corner kicks.
The 'Cats return home now for their final two home contests at Alumni Stadium, playing host to Samford and Chattanooga, Oct. 22-24. The game against the Mocs will be Davidson's Senior Day as it honors its four seniors in Drutchas, Flink, Elswick and Beth Peters (Atlanta, Ga.).
GAME NOTES: The Wildcats remain one SoCon win away from reach 100 in the program's 22-year history ... Drutchas tallied four points overall during the weekend and pushed her season total to a team-high 13 (3 goals, 7 assists) ... the senior's seven assists are a personal-best ... the defeat to the Bulldogs was Davidson's first in the all-time series as it had been 9-0 dating back to 2001.
