DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcat volleyball team placed four hitters in double figures and got double-doubles from Sarabeth Peele and Christine Perzinski to defeat the North-division leading Elon Phoenix, 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 25-23), Saturday afternoon in SoCon action at Belk Arena.

Peele led Davidson (13-10, 4-2 SoCon) with 23 kills, matching her season high, and added 13 digs, while Perzinski tallied 11 kills and 12 digs. Senior middle blocker Jorden Benedict finished with a career-high 17 kills and hit a match-high .600; she had 16 kills against Chattanooga on Nov. 14, 2009. Junior opposite Erin Lupfer was the final Wildcat hitter in double figures, chipping in 10 kills.

Senior setter Hayley Lawson finished with a career-high 60 assists; she had 58 assists against Furman on Oct. 2, 2007. Senior libero Jennifer Chamblee was one of three players in double figures in digs, leading the Wildcat defense with 21 digs.

Elon (13-10, 5-2 SoCon) placed three hitters in double figures, as Sarah Schermerhorn, Lauren Copenhagen and Caroline Lemke each finished with 12 kills. Megan McMahon tallied 43 assists, and Ali Deatsch led the Phoenix defense with 13 digs. Copenhagen also finished with 11 digs.

After trading points to start the match, the Wildcats broke a 4-4 stalemate with a 6-2 run to open a 10-6 lead and force Elon into a timeout. Davidson led by as many as six in the set, including as late as 20-14 when the Phoenix took their second timeout. Elon cut the Wildcats' lead to 22-18 with a 4-2 run, but Davidson won four of the last five points to take the 25-19 win. Peele had seven of her 23 kills in the first set, in which Davidson outhit Elon, .457 to .094.

The Wildcats used a 4-0 run, including kills from Peele, junior middle blocker Madison Benedict and Perzinski, to open a 7-4 lead to take control of the second set. Davidson took a 12-6 lead on a kill from Jorden Benedict to force Elon to call timeout, and the Phoenix responded by winning three of the next five to narrow the gap, 14-9. But the Wildcats stayed in control, and leading 19-14, used a 5-1 run to open a 24-15 lead. A Wildcat service error gave Elon a second set point, but Jorden Benedict put away her third kill of the set to lift Davidson to a 25-16 win and a 2-0 lead at the break.

Elon opened the third frame with a 5-1 run, but the Wildcats fought back within a score, 7-6, on a kill from Lupfer and a Phoenix hitting error. Elon, though, pushed back and opened a 17-12 lead before forcing Davidson into a timeout, 21-15. The Wildcats rattled off six straight points, to knot the set at 22, but back-to-back errors gave Elon a set-point chance and Lemke punched home the winner for a 25-22 Elon victory.

Davidson won the first four points of the fourth set and took a 7-2 lead before Elon took a one-point lead, 9-8, behind a 7-1 run. The teams traded points, until tied at 10, a kill by Jorden Benedict and a hitting error by Elon, lifted Davidson to a slight 12-10 lead. Neither team could get any distance, though, as the Phoenix won the next two, and the teams tied seven times over the last third of the frame. Davidson took a 21-19 lead on two straight Phoenix errors, but Elon kept within a point until a kill from Peele gave Davidson a match-point try at 24-22. The Phoenix fought for one more point, but Peele's 23rd kill delivered the 25-23 set win for the match.

Davidson returns to action tomorrow, when it hosts UNCG (16-6, 4-3), who are coming off a 3-0 loss to Georgia Southern Friday, in a 4 p.m. match.
