GREENVILLE, S.C. – Davidson held Furman to just one shot on goal to earn their second consecutive shutout, but the Wildcats were unable to crack the Paladin defense as the Southern Conference men's soccer rivals played to a 0-0 draw Tuesday night in Stone Soccer Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Chip Sanders (Thomasville, Ga.) earned his career-best fifth shutout of the season for Davidson (5-4-4, 1-2-1 SoCon) without making a single save. Junior defender Hunter Hayes (Peachtree City, Ga.) turned away Furman's lone shot on goal off a corner kick in the 63rd minute.
Alex Kann made four saves for Furman (5-4-3, 1-0-1 SoCon) including one in the first overtime period.
“With two rivals and two teams seeking winning momentum, it is always going to be a close battle,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “We're proud of our team defense and earning our second shutout in a row. Keeping a talented team like Furman off the board for 110 minutes is a great accomplishment that we can build on.”
Sophomore midfielder Brian McGue (Dublin, Ohio) took the only shot in extra time, but Kann stopped his header attempt.
“We played much better in the second half and I thought we were the better team as the game progressed,” said Spear. “I would have liked to see us pull the trigger and take some more shots. We had some chances where we tried to pass or dribble one more time when we could have pulled the trigger and created some more scoring chances by shooting from distance.”
Sophomore midfielder Peter Paras (Dublin, Ohio) led the Wildcats with two shots while six others had one. Danny Hojaij and Josh Lietch led Furman with three shots apiece. Overall, Furman held a slight edge for the game in shots, 9-8. Furman also held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks, but Davidson had two in the second overtime.
Davidson faces another conference test Saturday night at 7 p.m. when they return to Alumni Stadium to take on UNCG.
“We're excited about playing at home after a long four-game road stretch and confident that we are heading in the right direction,” said Spear.
Notes: The scoreless draw was Davidson's first since 2003 against UNC Wilmington … the 'Cats' four draws are the most since 2002 when they also had four … their five shutouts are the most since 2005 when they had six.
