PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Maine scored twice in the first 12 minutes and held Davidson scoreless to earn a 2-0 victory over the Wildcats in a neutral site non-conference field hockey match at Brown University's Warner Roof Monday afternoon.

Kelly Newton scored at 2:31 and Jocelyn Mitchell scored at 11:31 to give Maine (10-4, 0-2 America East) a lead they would not relinquish. Brittany Fleck made five saves to deal the high-scoring 'Cats their first shutout of the season.

Davidson (10-3, 2-0 NorPac) turned up the pressure offensively in the second half, outshooting Maine, 9-6 and out cornering them, 6-1, but the Black Bears' defense withstood the pressure.

Junior Hannah English (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) led the Wildcats with three shots each.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) made five stops for Davidson, four of which came in the first half. Maine held a 17-11 advantage in shots for the game, while Davidson held an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.

The loss snapped Davidson's five-game winning streak, their longest since 2003.

Maine was receiving top-20 votes in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll to be effectively ranked 23rd in the nation. Davidson also received votes in the same poll for the fifth-straight week to be effectively ranked 35th.

Davidson will play their third game in four days at 12 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart. The Wildcats return to Belk Turf Field Saturday, hosting VCU at 12 p.m.
