FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart goalkeeper Kim Stow made 13 saves and Stephanie Kasten scored the game-winner in overtime to lead the Pioneers to a 2-1 upset win over Davidson in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday afternoon at Campus Field.
Senior Jennie Mostellar (New Bern, N.C.) scored Davidson's lone goal just 1:13 into the second half, knocking in a rebound to break a scoreless tie, but it was all the scoring the Wildcats (10-4, 2-0 NorPac) could muster despite outshooting and out-cornering Sacred Heart (2-9, 0-1 NEC), 14-3 and 9-1, respectively, in the second half alone.
Dana Luhrs scored the equalizer in the 62nd minute and then assisted on Kasten's game-winner off a penalty corner just 1:06 into the extra frame.
Junior midfielder Hannah English (Louisville, Ky.) led Davidson with seven shots, six on goal. Mostellar followed with four shots, all on goal.
Stow made 13 stops on 14 shots on goal, as Davidson fired 18 total shots for the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) made two saves as Sacred Heart finished with five shots for the game.
The Wildcats return to Belk Turf Field Saturday, hosting VCU at 12 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the regular season. VCU was received Top 20 votes in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll released Tuesday morning, effectively ranking them 25th.
Notes: The back-to-back losses are the first for Davidson this season … the 'Cats have scored 43 goals so far this season, and need nine more to equal their single-season record of 52.
