DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team will look to return to the win column against a talented VCU squad that ranks just outside the Top 20 nationally when they play their final non-conference game of the regular season Saturday at 12 p.m. at Belk Turf Field. The Wildcats also announced that the start of their match against Appalachian State on Sunday, Oct. 31 has been moved an hour earlier to 2 p.m.
Fans that are unable to make it out to the field can follow all the action via live stats, which can be found here.
Scouting the Wildcats: Davidson enters the match with a 10-4 record, but lost consecutive games for the first time this season on Monday and Tuesday. Their 2-0 loss to a very strong Maine team was their first shutout loss of the season, and they then fell to Sacred Heart, 2-1 in overtime, the following day. The losses ended a five-game winning streak, which was their longest since 2003. Finley Amato and Sarah Fisher earned their second and third respective NorPac East weekly awards following their performances at Brown Saturday. Amato scored twice in Davidson's 5-3 win to earn the offensive honor. Fisher preserved the Wildcats' lead by matching her career high for saves with 11, including nine in the first half, to claim the defensive honor. The 'Cats have scored 43 goals so far this season, and need nine more to equal their single-season record of 52. Amato entered the week ranked 10th in the nation in goals per game, averaging one. She leads the team and NorPac with 12 goals and four assists for 28 points, and needs six more goals and eight points to equal the respective team records in those categories. Hannah English and Gray Robinson each need two more assists to equal the team record. Christine Rua is second in the conference in scoring with 19 points (9g, 1a), while Robinson is fourth with 16 points (5g, 6a). Jennie Mostellar is eighth with 15 points (5g, 5a).
Scouting the Rams: VCU, of the CAA, comes to Davidson on a three-game winning streak, with an overall record of 10-4. They beat Hofstra, 5-2, leading to another win against James Madison, 4-3. Most recently, they shutout NorPac member Longwood, 4-0. Their four losses have all come to teams presently ranked in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Top-20 Poll: No. 18 Albany, No. 15 Boston University, No. 4 Princeton and No. 16 Drexel. Kelsey Scherrer leads the team with 10 goals, and four assists, and Marle Van dessel closely follows with eight goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Erin Jablonski has a save percentage of .727, and a 1.79 goals against average.
The Series: VCU holds an 8-9 advantage in the all-time series with the Wildcats, winning the last four meetings. The 'Cats suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Rams in Richmond, Va. last year. Davidson last defeated VCU in 1999.
Up Next: Davidson will wrap up the regular season with four crucial NorPac Conference games. They will hit the road to face Appalachian State Thursday and Longwood Saturday. They will return home for a Friday, Oct. 29 match at 7 p.m. against Radford and a Sunday, Oct. 31 match against Appalachian State at 2 p.m.
