Wildcats Look to Stay Hot, Play Samford on Saturday in Key SoCon Game

DAVIDSON, N.C. — In a matchup of first and second place teams in the Southern Conference, the Davidson women's basketball team will host Samford on Saturday evening at John M. Belk Arena.
The Opening Tip
Davidson (7-7, 5-1 SoCon), winners of its past five games, plays its sixth home game in the past seven contest on Saturday, hosting the Samford Bulldogs (11-5, 5-2 SoCon) at 7 p.m. as the Wildcats seek to increase their first place lead in the SoCon standings.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series is two games old, with Samford taking both games in last year's inaugural season in the SoCon.
Scouting the Wildcats
•The Wildcats picked up a non-conference win on Wednesday, a 69-53 decision over visiting Longwood for their fourth straight win at home, and fifth overall.
•They have won seven of their last eight games to get back to an even .500 record.
•Davidson put four of its five starters in double figures, led by the senior duo of Julia Paquette and Alex Thompson with 15 points each.
•The last two games has seen Paquette combine for 29 points and 15 rebounds, while Thompson has gone for 37 points and seven assists. Paquette is leading the conference in field goal shooting at 50.7, while Thompson is second in three-point shooting at 41.7 percent.
•Sophia Aleksandravicius, a double-double machine lately, registered her fourth double-double in a row (6th of the year) by tallying 11 points and 14 rebounds. She is second in the league in rebounding at 8.4 rpg (118 total).
•The freshman is averaging 17 points and 12 rebounds during the Wildcats' win streak.
•During the Wildcats' five-game win streak, they are averaging 74.4 ppg and holding the opposition to 58.8 ppg, while shooting 44 percent from the field (37.5 from behind the arc) and hauling in close to 46 rebounds. Their defense is holding opponents to 32.8 percent shooting.
•Wednesday, Davidson held its sixth opponent to under 35 percent shooting as Longwood hit just 18 of its 60 attempts for an even 30 percent.
•Davidson is in the midst of playing five games in a 10-day stretch. In addition, starting back on Dec. 7 and then finishing Jan. 11, Davidson is playing seven of its nine games during that stretch at home.
•Davidson hit the 50-board mark for the second time on Wednesday, with a season-high 17 of them coming off the offensive glass.
•Coach Watts (ninth season) is the program's all-time winningest coach with a 137-113 record. She is also closing in on 100-SoCon wins for her career, sitting at 95-61.
•Last year saw Davidson drop its home game against Samford, 78-67, despite putting four players in double figures with Ashley Lax and Paquette leading the way with 14 points each.
Scouting the Bulldogs
•Samford ran its win streak to three straight after a 70-47 victory over College of Charleston on Monday to move to 5-2 in league play.
•Leading the way was Emily London with a career-best 28 points, to push her season average to 14.9, good for 4th in the SoCon.
•She has led the team eight times in scoring and ranks in the top-five in the league in scoring, free throw (2nd) and three-point percentage (1st-.507), and three-pointers made per game (2nd).
•Last year, London scored 22 points twice against the Wildcats.
•Savannah Hill (11.8 ppg) and Monica Maxwell (10.4 ppg) are also averaging in double figures.
•Samford is 3-4 on the road this year after coming off a program-best 11-3 mark last year.
•The Bulldogs return eight of its 12 letterwinners (four starters) from last year's 22-7 squad.
•As a team, Samford ranks first in the SoCon in six categories, including made three-balls (8.1 pg).
•Samford opened the season winning six of its first seven games, including the UAB Thanksgiving Classic.
