STATESBORO, Ga. -- No. 27-ranked Georgia Southern scored seven runs in the first inning and rolled to a 20-8 win to secure the Southern Conference series victory over the Davidson Wildcats Saturday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Davidson dropped its fourth straight game to fall to 13-19 overall and 8-9 in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern improved to 27-9 overall and 11-4 in the league.
Georgia Southern took control early, chasing Wildcat starter Chris Lamb (1-3) in the first inning. He took the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits.
Ty Wright and Kevin Bowles started the offense for the Eagles with back-to-back singles, and Lamb walked the bases loaded. Eric Phillips plated Wright, before Brian Pierce's three-RBI, one-out double did most of the damage. Wright drove in the seventh run with his second hit of the inning, bringing Mac Read on for the final out.
The Eagles added a run in the second before the Wildcats would put something together in the fourth. Danny Weiss drew a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out base hit from Brett Shore.
Georgia Southern, though, continued to add to its lead with three runs in each of the next three innings, opening up a 17-1 lead.
Davidson did almost all of its damage in the eighth, putting up seven runs on five hits against relievers Ryan McCafferty and Tony Chisman. McCafferty started the inning with a single to Chase FitzPatrick and walked the bases loaded as pinch hitter Sam Payne and Seth Freeman took free passes.
Chisman got the first out of the inning, but gave up four straight hits for runs, including a two RBI-double to pinch hitter Calvin Sigelbaum, an RBI-single to Graham Chapman, an RBI-double to Zach Kayne and a three-RBI home run to Drew Gadaire. Charles Matthews got the Eagles out of the jam and worked the final 1 2/3 of scoreless baseball.
Jake Brown (3-3) picked up the win for Georgia Southern, holding the Wildcats to just one run on six hits in six innings while striking out nine and walking a pair.
Georgia Southern posted 23 hits, led by Wright and Pierce, who each had three.
Davidson hitters combined for 12 hits, with Kayne, Weiss, Shore, Sigelbaum and Chapman each collecting a pair. Gadaire drove in a team-high three runs on his 10th home run of the season, good for fifth in the SoCon, and second in as many games.
The teams will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
