Davidson W. Lacrosse Has 9-5 Setback at American

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The American University women's lacrosse team defeated Davidson 9-5 on Sunday afternoon at Jacobs Field in a game in which the Eagles never trailed.

Senior Kira Sonberg led the Eagles with a career-high five goals, while three other AU players tallied a combined four goals to help seal the win.

Davidson was led in scoring by Haley Cook, who scored her 18th and 19th goals of the season. Senior Callie Seymour was credited with the Wildcats lone assist on the afternoon.

American (3-11) got off to a quick start with a pair of unassisted goals in the first four minutes by Amanda Makoid and Sonberg. Davidson (5-8) answered right back with an Emily Rahill conversion to cut the AU lead to 2-1, before Sonberg knocked home her second goal of the contest to give the Eagles a two-goal advantage once again. AU eventually went into halftime up 4-1.

AU opened up the final 30 minutes strong with a Lauren Schoenberger goal, off a Leslie Fischer feed, to take a 5-1 lead.

However, the Wildcats charged back with four consecutive goals, capped off by Cook's second score of the game, over a 12-minute stretch to tie the score at 5-5 with 12:50 to play in the contest. Cook scored two goals during the rally, while Jen Crawford and Jenna Mugele each tallied a goal.

The action went back-and-forth over the next six minutes before Makoid converted her second goal of the game to give AU a 6-5 lead it never relinquished.

Michele Pav was credited with eight saves in goal, while the Eagles' Frankie Solomon and Kaska Komosinski combined for six saves.

The Wildcats did outshot the Eagles, 20-19, while also forcing them into 17 turnovers. Eight of those 17 turnovers were marked as caused turnovers with Jennifer Lindsey forcing a team-best three of them.

Erin Betsch paced the defense with three groundballs, while three other Wildcats tallied two apiece in leading Davidson to 12 groundballs as a team.

Davidson seeks to halt its six-game skid by returning home on Apr. 17 for a matchup against Stanford at 6 p.m.
