DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson senior quarterback Ryan Alexander has been given the 2009 Male College Student-Athlete Leadership Award for Mecklenburg County.
The award is affiliated with the National Athletes in Action (AIA) Bart Starr Award, given out at the annual SuperBowl Breakfast each year to the NFL player exemplifying tremendous character and leadership on and off the field. This year's winner was Warrick Dunn of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Alexander graduated in December as Davidson's all-time leader in passing yards (9,376), total offense (9,680), passing touchdowns (72) and completions (775). He was a two-time second-team All-PFL selection and earned all-league honorable mention honors in 2005. He was named a second-team FCS Mid-Major All-American by the Football Gazette in 2006 and was named PFL Offensive Player of the Week three times during his four-year career.
Alexander also owns the school's single-season marks for passing yards (2,581) and total offense (2,766) and single-game records for touchdown passes (6) and completion percentage (77 percent).
Off the field, Alexander participated in Campus Outreach and founded Athletes Connect, a faith-based organization at Davidson College for varsity athletes. He also led a bible study group through Lake Forest Community Church. He was named to the PFL Academic Honor Roll (3.0 GPA or higher for fall semester) in three seasons, and the two-year team captain was named second-team Academic All-PFL in 2006, which is voted on by the league's sports information directors.
Alexander will continue his football playing career with the Darmstadt Diamonds in Germany, beginning this April.
