Field Hockey To Host App State In NorPac Match Saturday
10/22/2009 2:56:57 PM | Field Hockey
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team will join the fight against lung cancer during Saturday's NorPac match against Appalachian State at Belk Turf Field, starting at 12 p.m. The 'Cats will don white ribbons during the match to raise awareness for the cause.
Fans attending the game will be able to make donations in support. Davidson will be joining Virginia Commonwealth and William & Mary in the “Play for a Cure” effort. The Wildcats' involvement was inspired by Maggie Long, an assistant coach at Monmouth and a former teammate of Davidson coaches Ginny Sutton and Becky Van Zee when both played at William & Mary. Long's father, Dave, is currently battling the disease.
Live stats from the match will be available.
Scouting the Wildcats: Freshman Finley Amato enters the match as the reigning NorPac East Rookie of the Week. Amato earned the award for the second time this season after registering a goal against Radford last week. Amato leads the 'Cats in scoring with four goals and one assist. The 'Cats have had a balanced attack throughout the season as behind Amato, four players are tied with five points and four are tied with four-points. The 'Cats are 4-11 overall, 0-4 in the NorPac East.
Scouting the Mountaineers: Appalachian State stands at 6-10 overall, 1-2 in the NorPac East and is currently on a six-game losing streak. However, the Mountaineers have been strong in goal as goalkeeper Bridgette Street averages 10.38 saves per game to rank second in the nation, and also leads the conference with a .769 save percentage. She has earned four NorPac East Defensive Player of the Week awards this season. Jessie Harris leads the team in scoring with five goals and one assist.
The Series: This is the second meeting between the two NorPac squads. At ASU, the 'Cats fell 3-2 after allowing three early goals and seeing their second-half rally fall just short. For ASU, Nicole Morgan scored twice and Harris once. Sophomore Christine Rua and freshman Annie Evans brought the 'Cats within one late. The 'Cats hold a 32-28-2 edge all-time.
Up Next: The Cat's will have just one regular season contest remaining. NorPac East foe Longwood will visit Belk Turf Field for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 31. Davidson's field hockey Class of 2010 will be honored prior to the match.
