OAKLAND, Calif. – Fresh off a 4-1 win over then-No. 6 Duke and a hard-fought match at Elon, the 9-2 Davidson men's soccer team was ranked 21st in the nation by Soccer America in the publication's weekly top-25 poll released on Monday.
The 'Cats had not been ranked nationally since the 2005 season when Soccer America ranked them as high as No. 21.
Davidson boasts the fourth-best scoring offense in the country and also leads the Southern Conference with an average of 2.55 goals per game. Senior F Charlie Reiter (Westport, Conn.) leads the SoCon with 23 points (8 goals, 7 assists) to rank sixth nationally in points per game. He is followed by teammate Yannick Pilgrim (Arima Trinidad & Tobago) with 18 points (7g, 4a), good for a 16th-place ranking in the same category. Junior MF Alex Caskey is tied for fourth in the conference with 14 points (6g, 2a).
“The national ranking is a tremendous compliment to the guys on the team,” said head coach Matt Spear. “They have worked hard, pulled together, and put together a great run. Each player has an important role, and their contributions are all vital. This is also a shining moment for our athletic department, soccer alumni, and fans to celebrate too.”
Regionally, Davidson moved up to fourth in the South in a poll released Monday afternoon by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The 'Cats, were fifth last week and moved ahead of Duke, which fell from third after losses to Davidson and N.C. State. N.C. State moved from fourth to third in the South. North Carolina and Wake Forest lead the region, respectively.
The Wildcats have gone 2-0 against nationally-ranked opponents, earning 4-1 wins over then-No. 25 South Carolina (Sept. 25) and No. 6 Duke (Oct. 6). Presently, Wake Forest is the only nationally-ranked opponent remaining on Davidson's schedule. Soccer America ranked them No. 4 in Monday's poll.
Davidson will host conference foes Appalachian State (Wednesday) and Furman (Saturday). Both matches are set for 7 p.m. in Alumni Stadium.
