VCU Fends Off Davidson Field Hockey

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth scored three first-half goals and was solid defensively, defeating the Davidson field hockey team, 3-0 in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field.
The Wildcats record stands at 4-9 pending an official ruling regarding the status of yesterday's cancelled match against Saint Louis. VCU improved to 7-6.
Kelsey Scherrer scored twice for VCU, registering the opening tally nine minutes into the contest after receiving a pass from Marle van Dessel. Van Dessel then scored in the 16th minute on a penalty corner from Hannah Lyerly. Rachel Krumm then directed a rebound to Scherrer for the final tally in the closing minutes of the first half.
The 'Cats fought back in the second half, outshooting VCU 12-3 and not allowing a shot on goal. Davidson was unable to score though as goalkeeper Erin Jablonski made three saves. Sophomore Gray Robinson led the 'Cats with five shots while junior Clare Perry had two shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Christa Goeke made 10 saves., all in the first half. VCU outshot Davidson 22-13 for the match. Both teams had seven penalty corner attempts.
The 'Cats will play three of their four remaining matches before the NorPac Championship Tournament at Belk Turf Field. On Wednesday, Radford will visit Davidson for a 6 p.m. match.
