McCausland's Game-Winning Score Paces ‘Cats to 1-0 Win Over Elon

Gavin McFarlin - Assistant SID

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Tracy McCausland (Albuquerque, N.M.) knocked in a rebound goal off junior Kyri Bye-Nagel's (Hanau, Germany) header in the 80th minute to break up a scoreless game to lead the Davidson women's soccer team to a 1-0 road win over Elon on a chilly Thursday evening in Southern Conference action.

Senior defender Melanee Smith (Bloomfield Township, Mich.) and Bye-Nagel each tallied their seventh and second assists, respectively, of the year as the Wildcats ran their record to 9-4-3 overall and 7-2-0 in league play. Elon fell to an even 7-7-2 on the season and 3-5-1 in SoCon action.

McCausland's game-winner was her third of the season, and sixth of her career, as she scored her third goal of the season placing her in a six-way tie for second-best on the team. With her three assists on the year, McCausland is tied for second on the team with nine points.

After Davidson picked up the intensity in the second half, it was finally able to capitalize on its fourth and final corner kick of the evening. With Smith lined up to kick the ball, she sent a pass to the far corner of the six-yard box where Bye-Nagel raised up and headed the ball off the crossbar. The ball came straight down and bounced to McCausland, who slipped it pass the endline for the first and only score of the game.

The first half saw neither team take control of possession, though Elon did get off three shots on goal, but all three strikes on goal where taken outside the 18-yard box.

Smith and sophomore Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) each recorded a shot for the Wildcats, but both attempts where off target in the first half.

Freshman Jesse Baxa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) returned between the pipes and picked up her third shutout win of the year, registering four saves on the evening. Baxa has allowed just two goals in her five games played this year.

Elon held a slim, 9-8, advantage in shots, but the Wildcats won the battle in corner kicks, 4-3. Of the Phoenix nine shots, four where put on goal as Katina Boozer led the team with five shots, two of them coming on goal.

The Wildcats remain on the road as they head to UNC Greensboro to play the Spartans on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.
